Title: How does an appreciation of the musical beat arise?

Chi Ho Cheung (Eric)  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello Dr. Chris and naked staff,

My name is Eric, in Seattle, Washington, USA. I'm a big fan of the show (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/). (I bought a Zune [ipod, but from microsoft] just so I can listen to all the naked shows) This is my first time writing in questions.

Where does the musical "beat" come from? Did somebody invented? Is it even clearly defined (is my beat the same as your beat the same as the universal beat)? And why is the beat the length it is? I figure the cavemen living hundreds of thousands of years ago will also need some "beat" to their killing-and-eating-the-deer song.

What do you think?
