Hi all, I've returned from the Australian National Science Week Tour, which was a talking point in it's own right - maybe I'll tell you about that later, but latterly I was in the wilds of western Australia, which was a magical experience. Probably the highlight for me was seeing the Pinnacles - the fossilised remains of a one-time prehistoric forest millions of years ago. The trunks of what would have been the trees have been preserved and stand, in some cases, metres tall. It was the most incredible and awe-inspiring sight. The photos below were taken at night - I got there at sun-down - so they are slightly ill-lit, but you can get the picture.

Up in NW Australia, in the Kalbarri national park, Murchison river valley, I found these 400 million year old fossilised footprints (my shoe is in it for scale!) left by an aquatic creature probably resembling a scorpion. The rocks in the valley are 400-420 million years old, the time when water-based life first began to invade the land; the animal that made these tracks would have been dragging itself out of the water and up the muddy bank of the river...WA is indeed a magical place...

I met this award-winning Beijing-based Chinese caligrapher (and ex-general from the Chinese Army) at a laboratory party in Adelaide (thanks Jane!).
He agreed to do some caligraphy for me, but can anyone tell me what it says...?

Wow how spooky. This reminds me of witches castles from fairy tails where everyone trying to get in has been petrified. Some of them look like creatures not trees. woooooow!

This was taken after the final session of the tour at Curtin University in WA in front of 500 budding young scientists, some of whom are in the picture!
The lady is Lyn Beazley, chief scientific officer of Western Australia, who is an absolute legend.

This lovely photo was sent to me by chemist Alf Larcher, next to me in the centre. It was taken after an evening of explosive Naked Science / Crisp Packet Fireworks at Curtin University, WA. These wonderful, and clearly insane, people turned up to see my show. An even madder person (on the end) had even bought one of my books. Thanks guys!
