Title: Could you identify two rocks for me ?

Could you geologists please be so kind as to give me info on these rocks ? feel free to throw in amusing quips and comments,it adds to the light mood of these forums. lol

Tr-ul:  What a nice rock!  Really, really gneiss!

brul2:  Hard to tell from photo.  At first glance I thought amphibolite- but didn't see any foliation.  Might be marble? or quartzite?  Can you give us any more info?  Hardness?  Density?  Does it fizz if you put acid on it?  Could you get a larger closeup?

LOOKS LIKE SHIST TO ME! (Rock #2 only)

Both probably came from the same sedimentary sequence that was then metamorphosed.

If found within a mile or so of each other.

Here are some slightly better pics-I'm taking pics with a webcam circa win 98 so forgive me.

and yes these rocks were found within a foot or so.I've been digging a bit and sampling a few areas on my property-was curious what types of rocks I could find and i did notice the minerals or rocks seem to come in pockets of like rocks or minerals. also i could be wrong but this rock seems to change color under different light conditions or prolonged light-sometimes looks blue or slightly green or almost black.streak test is white so im not sure-used a white ceramic tile.i think its a very hard rock after doing hardness tests but I'm not sure. are the scratches made on the rock supposed to be able to be rubbed away? everything that scratched it was easily rubbed off. its able to scratch a thin glass from a photoframe if that helps.

Too true ....

but the fine grained nature of the second picture made it so I could not resist my baser urges.

(At least that is what I am going to say. I never have been able to resist them!)

quartzite or quartz, especially if you can scratch glass.
