Title: La Cucaracha
Post by: Ians Daddy on 13/09/2003 00:29:44
While we're discussing the cockroach, I thought I'd put up a few tid-bits.

http://iaia.essortment.com/cockroachanthro_ryoa.htm

"Pest cockroachs can withstand temperatures as cold as 32°F (0°C), but will die if the temperature goes much below that."

"Many insects go into a state of diapause (a type of sleep or slowdown of their body systems) as winter begins. In this arrested state they are able to survive weather conditions that would normally kill them."

"[They]produce glycerol in their bodies, a type of natural anti-freeze that allows them to survive freezing temperatures."

"The liquid from a cruched cockroach can be applied to a sting to relieve the pain."

I just read that freezing can , in fact, kill them, but it takes up to two days. I froze mine from after school one day and thawed it the next afternoon. So, approximately 24 hours is my record.

Interesting critters indeed.

Winter's coming here...how can I get my body to produce glycerol?

Hahaha....someone ought to look into that. Could be a scientific breakthrough. Human anti-freeze / coolant. Now my gears are grinding.

Well, according to this classic song, the ones in Mexico just like to hang out and enjoy a little ganja from time to time.

La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar
Porque no tiene, porque le falta
Marijuana que fumar.

(The cockroach, the cockroach
Now he can't go traveling
Because he doesn't have, because he lacks
Marijuana to smoke.)

Maybe I'll get some "stash" to offer up any roaches that come around. Could prompt them to do some "traveling".

Maybe Mexican cockroaches aren't that bad.
Just a thought.

Ha ha ha, never knew what it was that I was singing to my son when he was little.  I would take his hands and pull back and forth like a washing machine, going really fast at the end.  Never failed to make him laugh.

Why, thank you, Richard. I've tried to come up with something, oh so clever, but it escapes me. Does anyone have any suggestions? I thought I'd give my youngest son some spotlight as well. How about:  Gracens too ?

Just a thought.

I'm in the same spot.  Can't really think of another name either.  I was just so happy not to be called average any more.  Should we throw ourselves on the mercy of the panel?

well im shocked!all i see here is young cockroaches being egged on to smoke ganja,i think as adults we should take a more sensible role in bringing up"roaches",are we going to have gangs of drug crazed cockroaches, roaming our streets, commiting crime willy-nilly,pestering lone females, abusing the elderly.we must put a stop to this at once.  [}:)]

every village has one !

I don't know how that song became so famous

Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman.  LVB

SQUASHING, SQUASHING
HAVENT YOU EVER FELT THE WARM CARRESS,OF A GENTLY FLICKED ANTENAE,ON YOUR NAKED BODY.
HAVE YOU NEVER SKIPPED THROUGH A SUMMER MEADOW, WITH YOUR FAVORITE COCKROACH,
LAUGHED AND PLAYED FOOD FIGHT,COVERED EACH OTHER IN SQUIRTY CREAM.
WALKED HAND IN HAND ALONG THE BEACH IN THE EARLY MORN.
IF YOU DID ANY OF THESE THINGS YOU WOULD SEE THE BEAUTIFUL SIDE OF THE COCKROACH CHARACTER, AND STOP CONDEMNING THEM ALL AS PESTS.

At a place where I used to work, we devised a fun game (actually, in hindsight, it was rather cruel). 2 lines of water, slightly closer together than the length of a cockroach, along a benchtop with the positive output from a megameter attached to 1, the negative to the other. Rattle the roach about in a matchbox then place it between the 2 lines of water. We'd have little bets on how long it would take for the roach to electrocute itself.[}:)]

Just as an afterthought, why are you so surprised that a song about roaches contains a reference to ganja? [:D]
