1. Count of Monte Cristo - complex, yet singleminded.
2. Winston Churchill, - alcoholic, elitist, frequent failure, ultimate success through application of courage, fortitude, intellect and persistence i.e. complex, yet singleminded.
3. Nelson Mandela - the courage it took to forgive, anyet remember. Yes, a complex, yet single minded character.
4. ???

Ask me tomorrow and you shall get a different list, with different reasons.

Observe; collate; conjecture; analyse; hypothesise; test; validate; theorise. Repeat until complete.

I have to admit to being very uneasy about the whole notion of heroes.

People are people, and if you put them up on a pedestal, you are merely setting them up for a fall..

There are individual actions that people have taken that I admire, just as there are individual actions that people have taken that I condemn, but that doesn't mean that I think that the one act (or small collections of acts) can ever define the totality of a person.

I agree with George. I don't have heroes as such. Certainly I recognise people who have performed heroic acts - Oskar Schindler being an example.
I don't really see how a fictional character can be a hero.

Perhaps a fictional character could be one of heroic inspiration then !..or a hero within the context of the text that inspires....
