Title: Proposal for a New Forum
Post by: davidjuliowang on 17/04/2006 09:29:02
I wasn't quite sure where to make this request.
Since this is the Feedback area I thought here would be fine.

I am exploring a fascinating thread with a fellow named George on learning new things, which has rapidly become a tirade against the current education system.

This thread is being explored in the "Physiology and Medicine" section and I have every intention of returning the conversation to some biochemical insights, but I would like to also explore the school idea as well.

I think it's fine to mix both an analysis of the school system with some biochemistry and "brain science", but, I think it would be useful to have a forum on the site dedicated to the:
SOCIAL SCIENCES.

What are the social sciences?
Well, for my purposes they are all the "English-like" sciences.
They involve a lot of reading, essay writing, debating, and very little of the hard stuff like: math, organic chemistry or physic proofs.
Am I debasing the social sciences?
A little...because I am sore that I am so poor in the hard sciences (I almost failed high school Chemistry).
I personally attribute this to a school system which can't accomadate different learning styles.
I personally find the Hard Sciences fascinating, but the way they are taught feels so cold and impersonal and overwhelming that to me Chemistry class felt like a heavy, wet blanket.

Social Sciences.
We call Antropology, Sociology, Psychology, etc. social sciences.

I've heard social science issues explored in the show countless times:
e.g.: Dancing as it relates to bodily symmetry and its effect on attracting mates.

So, I propose that another forum be started for the Social Sciences.

That said, take a look at my thread about "Why Is Learning New Things Hard?"
Anybody have any insights about how to increase neurological potentials?

Thanks!

I think that's a very good idea, but it would need rigorous policing - would you be able / willing to do that?

Hi Chris!

[In a suitably severe Klingon voice] I would be honored.

I could dedicate 30 minutes a day to the monitoring of the section and would thoroughly enjoy doing it.

Thank you for the offer!

enlarging forums is always a great thing, and one has to do that.

we are here to reply in that forum, hence nothing is wrong in starting the forums.

Thanks Neilep!

Thanks Suncorpse!

I've got a ton of great ideas for the category.

I've been thinking that the word "forum" is not as accurate as "category".

I think that a new "category" for the Social Sciences would be a nice addition to the Naked Scientist "forum".

I still want Physics, Medicine, Geology and the other categories to remain vibrant and active.

I look forward to monitoring all the fascinating thoughts my fellow humans have on that thing which most interests us all : each other.
