Title: SDR's how good

When I was a youngster the most desirable HF receivers,s were the RCA AR88 and slightly later the RACAL RA17.
In my dotage do I see them thru rose coloured spectacles, how would they compare with modern software derived receivers.

They are generally less clear than TLAs.
