Hi there peoples of science and good sense.

Question. At 61 I am about to losse my last wisdom tooth (really, have it drilled out of my jaw). THIS AFTERNOON !

Why are they called wisdom teeth other than they are supposed to come in about 18-21?

I don't know, I am 45 and still have mine.But the tooth fairy says she wants mine too. I told her I am not fixing whats not broke. No pain no cavities, no pulling my tooth out! I have all of my own teeth and plan on keeping them in my mouth till I die.
  Sorry you have had them out. Was it terrible, I have heard it hurts pretty bad. How are you doing Jim Bob?...Karen

I am 43 and still have one of them...ick!  Same thing Karen, here, tooth fairy wants mine...I defend it with all my might...lol  If it is not causing me harm, it will stay!

I am coming up to 50 (in the next few days), and so far only lost one wisdom tooth.  There is another tooth that is supposed to come out (that, or have root canal work done on it)., but like others here, I am resisting (it's been like that for about 18 moths, it's flared up once since the original problem arose, but is mostly quiescent).

I find very little long term pain involved in dental work.  Usually have a local anaesthetic if its anything major, although in my younger years (when I was probably less stressed out, so had better pain tolerance), I would not normally even bother with that.  Having to learn to adapt to a gap being there when there was a tooth before was as much a nuisance as was any short term pain (which was largely masked by the local anaesthetic).  Having a numb mouth for several hours is another irritant.
