A blob of vegetation was found on the shoreline of Gosport Creek Hampshire. It looks like a collection of rotting seaweed can anyone explain its presence please? There is a photo on my website:

Looks like sea lettuce seaweed to me. We frequently get this around the coast in Torbay. Stinks too when the sun gets on it.
Possible causes: Good amount of sunshine.
Sewage pouring into the sea enriches the water.
Farmyard run off into streams and rivers, especially over use of nitrates and phosphates, followed by huge downpour of rain, washing the fertilizer directly into the streams and rivers, which ends up in the sea and fertilizes the huge growth of seaweed.
Also, fertilization of the water can be a direct result of huge shoals of fish, but this is unlikely given the complaints of local fishermen.

..are you sure Andrew ?...it looks like the faecal remains of one of those very rarely seen Sea Cows !!..It's been reported that they often come to shore to graze upon seaweed and practice the rare art (equivalent to church bell ringing) of Moo Cow Ringing !...their favourite being Mike Oldfields Moobular Bells !!
...The finale ,culminating seventeen minutes and twelve seconds into the piece ,of a mutual crowning glory of unified Sea-Cow Patting.....this is what I am sure it is. [;)]
