After a struggle I have found a way into the service menu and switched on the USB movie playing function on my LG TV that was switched off for commercial reasons and the movies now play fine except for one thing.
I can not get the subtitles although they are there OK when I play the USB thru my PC (with FLV)

Pray, do tell how you got into that menu?!
-
use this

Maybe a "how-to" on YouTube ...

It seems that the only movie display program that allows you to enter recorded subtitles is FLV that LG do not use so I must increase my knowledge of European languages if I wish to watch multi language films on my LG TV !

I have solved the subtitle problem!
1, use a version of Wonder share Video Converter Platinum or Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate
2, Remember to tick merge files (you can adjust text size and colour) and set frame rate
3, the subtitle file that you add must be .srt if it is .sub it can be converted with the aid of
konwerternapisow at http://konwerternapisow.pl/en/ set correct frame rate
4, absence of malware cannot be guaranteed but I will make a thorough check
This produces a MP4 file which in the case of the movie "Nosferatu, Phantom derNacht" on
which I tested the procedure came out to 1.65Gb which was too large for my TV to handle
but a further conversion to AVI came out at 850Mb which runs fine.
