Title: Hadrian being cheeky again!
Post by: Hadrian on 28/07/2006 19:07:47
Hi everyone I am in the final stages of a new web development I have been working on. It’s selling Organic food (in Ireland only) over the internet. If anyone has the time please have a look at it and see if you can find any faults. I know it’s a bit of a cheek to ask.

I give you a nice star if you do LOL [^][^][:p][^][^]

Just to say if any logs on to the site etc I will delete then after. Also any transactions are only in test mode so no money will be taken from your card if you want to test the ordering system. Now that would be a big help. [^]

OK, where shall I start.  You have violated just about every one of my pet hates about web sites (and this is even before I really started using the web site).  More precisely, you have a web site that looks great when viewed on your specific browser, on the settings you have for your system, but quickly breaks as soon as it is viewed with a different browser with different settings.

I am presently viewing it with Mozilla FireFox (I have not even started to look at Opera, or Lynx, or any of the other browsers – all of which should either work, or at least degrade gracefully, or have a warning screen to say the site may not work properly with this browser).

Yes, the screen looks pretty, but everything is set with absolute fixed widths and positions, which means it does not scale properly.  If you increase the font scaling (by using Ctrl/+ on FireFox), then the text starts to overlay each other because the bounds set by absolute widths and positioning do not allow the space between the text to increase as the text size increases.

Secondly, you are partially controlling colour.  You have a CSS class called formfield that sets a text colour of very dark green. (almost black), but leaves the background colour to default.  This means that if the users default colours use a black background for text fields (as is the case on my machine), the effect is almost black text on a black background – totally unreadable.  You must either control both foreground and background colours, or leave both to default.

You are also using tooltips.  While this in general is a good thing, it is not clear why you are using them.  The tooltip you are throwing up contains exactly the same information as the link field displayed on the screen itself.  If there is no new information in the tooltip, then it serves no purpose.  Either remove the tooltip, of put some information in there that the user does not already see on the screen.

The structure of the menus is horrendous:

You have two links at the top that relate to 'online shopping' and 'home'.  Because these are within the same visual block (as denoted by the common background colour) as the main content (i.e. it all belongs to the DIV block called 'content'), so it looks like it is less significant than the menu bar on the left (which is contained in the DIV group 'subnavbar').  In fact, the 'subnavbar' is subservient to the menu placed in the 'content' block.  This is counterintuitive.

When you click on 'online shopping', and then click on 'either 'my quick lists' or 'my basket' you are taken to a login screen.  With this login screen, you change the menu in the 'subnavbar' (this is the same menu that you have in your 'Home' screen).  At this point, you have lost all the other menu options that you had from your 'online shopping' selection – this is wholly counter-intuitive.

I really don't think you need the two menu groups.  All you need to do is move the 'Home' link into the 'subnavgroup', and keep a largely fixed menu there.  You should have a separate 'login/register' menu option within the 'subnavbar', and people should not be taken directly to the login screen when they select 'my quick lists' – rather, if they select 'my quick lists' or 'my basket' and have not yet logged on, they should be taken to a screen that explains why they need to log on first, but leave them to maintain control over their own navigation of the site.

Incidentally, if you remove the menu group from the main 'content' block, you will remove the biggest problem with text becoming messed up by fixed positioning – although the far better answer is to get rid of fixed positioning altogether and to use tables (I know there is a school of thought that tables are old fashioned, but they are more robust).

I may get around to trying out the rest of the site when the colour scheme becomes usable, but as things stand, I cannot read what I am typing into the fields, so it makes use of the site too difficult.

One final point – there is a school of thought that suggests that asking people to login before placing an order can deter people from just casually roaming a site, and placing an impulse order.  I realise that forcing them to log in makes management of the site easier, and I can see advantages and disadvantages to each scenario – I am only saying that there may be a small group of potential customers who may be deterred by it.

Thanks for taking the time to give me some (lots) of feedback George.  It is really is good to get another perspective. I am aware that there are browser issues and I will be working to get them sorted before the site is launched.

What you don’t see is the whole site is in fact only around 4 pages. It is totally produces be a DB and has a large integrated backend to produce picking lists and stock control as well as a two-way SMS ordering and marketing system. The site management software is totally user friendly and that is where I have spent most of the development time. The built in category system is very nice as I allows vertically as many as you like while allowing products to be members of many categories as you like. Anyway thanks for flagging issues and giving your valued input.

Extremely brief at present.

Very minor detail – there is no consistency in the title fields in your web pages.  Some relate to the page you are on, some relate the whole site, and some are missing altogether (such as the page for “Why Organic”).  It would be best for the user if all pages had a title field of the site (i.e. the company name) – since this is the main thing that matters to the user.  If you want to use compound titles, having both the company name followed by the function the user has selected (e.g. “OrganicMarket2U – Registration”) then it would probably be the ideal.

The registration process allows you to request a registration to any email address.  It does not specify that you do not deliver outside Ireland.  The only place this becomes apparent (and even then, far from obvious) is when you start filling in the contact details, and the country is fixed as 'Ireland' (even then, it is very easy to skim over this, since no entry is required for that field, it is very easy not to notice that field exists).  It should be made far more obvious in many different places that deliveries will only be made within Ireland (I assume the Republic of Ireland, but even that is not clear, whether deliveries are also made to Northern Ireland).

I filled in the contact screen with rubbish information, and submitted it.  The page is shown again, but makes no comment as to which field is in error.  You should highlight which field has been incorrectly entered in order to provide some guidance to the user as to how to correct the entry.

You also request credit card details on the contact screen.  This, in my opinion, is wholly inappropriate.

Some people may in any case be wary of handing over their credit card details to a web site, and so the later in the process you request the card details, the more committed they have already become to making an order, and the more likely they will be to overcome their reluctance to hand over their card details.

There are also some card details you are not asking for – both the start date of the card, and the security code (3 digit code used for 'customer not present' transactions that is written on the back of the card).

It is also very possible that some customers may wish to use more than one card (i.e. some purchases may be wished to be paid for with one card, while other purchases paid for with a different card, possibly in order to help their own accounting, possibly if different people who share the same address are to be charged for the food on different occasions, or simply based upon when the repayment date on different cards is due or how much free credit they have on each card).

You might also wish to ask whether you even wish to store credit card information yourself, or use one of the various services that are available to do that (it may cost more to use a service, but it may give people more confidence handing their credit card details over to a well known financial institution that handing those details over to an unknown small trader).

The menu system is still difficult to follow, and lacks any consistency, but at least it is now legible, and it is obvious that the 'Online Shopping' and 'Home' are part of the menu system.

Might look at more later, but maybe give you something to think about for now.

Well we would be happy to serve a few local counties to begin with. There is a lot of logistics involved in setting up an operation like this. As well as strict rules around the whole organic issue.  There is a big buzz in Europe around organic produce far more then in Ireland but we hope that this wider trend well take off here too.

But who knows maybe some day if it takes off it not beyond imagination to think the we could have a delivery network in the UK but at the moment it is strictly a flight of fancy on my part.
