We certianly need other ' ology ' forums
Is it really possible to do the right thing for the wrong reason, or the wrong thing for the right reason ?
I don't know...do you ?
Some examples would be nice

HI Neil,
I think it is possible to do the right thing for the wrong reason, I have been doing it for over ten years, But cannot elaborate! I think both are possible but I really don't understand why people do them! It just happens, Circumstance dictate what people do in their own hearts and sometimes rational takes a back burner out of neccesity. Life decisions, and basic needs must also factor in and what may be the right for one, may not be right to someone else or vice versa! That is a very very hard question as there are so many factors to weigh in about the situation or decision!

Killing one person to save millions. Killing it wrong isn't it but if it saved millions would it not be just?

What is right and wrong? I am not sure that there are any moral absolutes. Who judges if the reason for anything is right or wrong. You may do something and the result isn't what you expect....... but not sure about the morals

I see your point and thank you for your response Steven.
Perhaps this is a case where in fact it's the other way round Steven that , as awful as it sounds, killing one person to save millions could be argued as doing the right thing for the wrong reason.....in that...if for some bizarre reason the only way to save these millions would be by the sacrifice of one person then that could be seen to be right.................
.......and the fact that the circumstance exists in the first place is wrong.
.By the way...I am not here to say what is right or what is wrong ..I'm eager to learn to so I often take the role of devils advocate

Hi Carol *waves at Carol*
Welcome to the site.
Thank you for your comment.
Of course you have opened this up to be the BIG topic between right and wrong and if we are to first agree on the definitions then we could take forever but I am just trying to see if there are some relatively clear examples where the answer is not so indeterminate.

I think Loretta might mean she stays at her job because she needs the cash to pay bills but she doesn't like the job? I know many people in that situation.
Am I right?

I am not even sure it is as simple as Lo not liking her job - she does not like some aspects of it, but maybe she would not even be so infuriated by it if she disliked it so much that she did not actually care what happened.
But whatever the issues about that, is doing a job simply because you need the money really a 'wrong reason' for doing a job (I suppose if the job was prostitution, one could get into a complex debate about whether sex and money should mix, but most other jobs, money comes into it somewhere, and if you can get more than money, then that is a bonus).

How much doing “the wrong thing for the right reasons” overlap the issue of “the ends justify the means”?

I stay at my job to help people get their issues straigtened out...but the wrong reason is I end up not taking off early enough to rest myself with just regular hours....

I like my job as it is challenging...but I don't like the other jobs that should not be associated with it! Cash to pay bills is important as I don't like being in debt..I have a goal I have set before myself and plan to achieve it!
