Aether theories

Robert B. Laughlin, Nobel Laureate in Physics, endowed chair in physics, Stanford University, had this to say about ether:
[Space] is filled with 'stuff'
Why can’t the ‘stuff’ interact with matter? Why can’t the ‘stuff’ be chaotic and lead to the probabilistic results of experiments?
Could the chaotic 'stuff' cause the Casmiir effect?
