Title: What alternatives are there to the use of diethylphthalate?

Usually Di ethyl phthalate is used as solvent for agarbatti(incense sticks) fragrance.But it dulls the colour of coloured Agarbatti(incense sticks).Are there any oxygenated solvents which can be used in incense sticks which do not affect the colour.I heard there are some oxygenated solvents which are by products of pharma companies which can be used.

Xylene will not discolor they use it to create blood stains on glass slides. It is used to carry paint pigments in paints and dies. And often used in cosmetics and perfumes. But the EPA will come after you for sure.

Glycerin is getting cheap it is a byproduct of biofuel manufacture. But I know nothing about making incense and not much about preserving a fragrance. Glycerin likes water, so that might be problem for incense.

What about good old ethyl alcohol?
