Title: May I request a temporary ban on moderators?
Post by: Greylorn on 02/09/2017 06:33:22
Following every OP I've presented to this forum, I've been inundated with replies from moderators-- people with "impressive" titles like "Forum God," or "Forum King," yet who, after my well-considered best assessment, are altogether almost as smart as a truckload of fence posts.

This comment is not meant to discredit fence posts in any way, and should not be construed by any society dedicated to fence post rights, or by any committee formed to protect those God-given inalienable rights, as a denial of the rights and intrinsic value of fence posts.  Fence posts are cleverly designed as part of an evil system to constrain cattle and other critters with an I.Q. of 2 (anything less than the I.Q. of the wisest fence post) to certain sections of land, and to prevent them from becoming voters.  This is not the fault of the fence posts, who are merely doing their job, and should ultimately be rewarded with full citizenship and government bennies.

All my previous OPs have been answered by various Forum Magnates (though I've yet to encounter a Forum Emperor) with predictable results::  I'm pretty much FOS.  The status quo prevails.  I'd like to propose a "Time Out" for the forum kings and gods, because their input is so predictable.

I'm appealing to the Forum Angel, probably Chris, who has yet to appear under that level of title, to his credit.  I have one request::

Grant me one post to which entitled forum participants, the gods, gurus, heroes, and others whose primary qualification is the persistent reiteration of accepted beliefs, no matter how illogical, no matter what value, are forbidden from commenting on.

That would mean a post not interfered with by the modern day equivalent of Galileo's Cardinals, who would not look through his telescope, or of Galileo's Pope, once a childhood friend, since become a member of the establishment-- the filthy Church and its threat of Inquisitional destruction of his aged body.

I make this request out of frustration, and of curiosity.  The establishment forum members have yet to contribute knowledge I lack, or fill that gap with useful insights.  Conversing with them is a waste of time-- like Trump trying to get Democrats to contribute to the US economy.  I'd like to find out if, absent the ongoing disapproval of TITLED FORUM MEMBERS, there are actually some intelligent readers who peruse this forum, and who might have well-considered ideas of their own.

Are we allowed to reply to this post?

Presumably, since I'm not a moderator, I can comment on this and explain that the titles he sees ("titles like "Forum God," or "Forum King,") are not actually because the people are mods, but just a jokey indication of how much stuff people have  posted here.
Greylorn has requested the chance to produce a thread that he can't reply to himself . His Titles is "Naked Science Forum Newbie" and he has said he doesn't want titled members to reply.

Not spotting this suggests to me that Greylorn is  "almost as smart as a truckload of fence posts.".

However, the simple answer to the question which the OP asks is going to be  "no".
If you want a thread where you can spout nonsense unoposed, start your own forum.

If you are right about it being a good idea not to kick nonsense into touch, then your forum will be a great success, and others- such as this one will wither and die.

Go for it!

Hi, Greylorn....
Moderators who comment on your posts are not exercising any moderator-like powers.
- Moderator powers would include deleting posts which are obscene, insulting, advertising, etc; warning the author and potentially banning the author if the event recurred.
- Having a quick skim through your posts (which is another moderator power), I don't think any of your posts have displayed any of these banned behaviors, so I think you are pretty safe from the moderators

Apart from their moderator powers, moderators are selected because they have a good general knowledge of science (sometimes very detailed knowledge in their specialty area), and are able to politely inform forum members about current scientific theories.
- You seem to have engaged well with comments from JeffreyH

Since this forum is about science and technology (and their impacts on society), gagging a group of people who have a good general knowledge of science and technology seems contradictory. In the "main" forums, it is actually neglectful to allow unjustified claims to go unchallenged, as that could mislead other readers.

If you wish to present some idea that is contrary to current scientific theories, we have the "New Theories" area, where there is some leeway for "out there" ideas. But if your theory seems to contradict well-established experimental results, or is internally inconsistent, expect some push-back even there!

PS: This particular thread isn't really about Zoology, so it will eventually get moved to "Just Chat" (another moderator power). Just keep future discussions about forum policy in a chat thread.

Sure you can make that request, Can I request only non terrestrials respond to me? Sure I can, will it work? probably not in an open forum such as this.

Actually, what he asked for was
Grant me one post to which entitled forum participants, the gods, gurus, heroes, and others whose primary qualification is the persistent reiteration of accepted beliefs, no matter how illogical, no matter what value, are forbidden from commenting on.
And he has had his "one post" on which nobody was allowed to comment.
So, I think you can comment on his other posts.

Bill,
Your thinking is straight and your questions are right on.  Good job of sorting out ideas from balderdash.   -G

I guess you have met some interesting fenceposts since you posted this.  Do you do introductions?

Seriously, though; my main reason for being on TNS is to learn, so I would really like to know what in my posts justified your including them in your universal condemnation.

Am I forbidden to comment on this post?

I just don't understand the purpose of this post and find it quite ignorant. People having a high rank on this forum ask generally good questions. The legitimacy of asking intelligent science questions is not reserved to people having a high rank.

Do not argue Graylorn, join in or you will be next, they own the internet and are of great power, you will be banned, procecuted, and then humiliated publicly, and the collective self assuredness and security can take its rightful place upon the rock of the sirens, harpooning the passing dolphins. Without troubling things called questions and thoughts to bother with.

Not only does Greylorn seem not to be arguing, he/she has not posted in this thread for over a month; which is a shame, as I was looking for some feedback.

It is a quote from the book Lord of the Flies, the boys chant it.

It is a quote from the book Lord of the Flies, the boys chant it.

And what is that supposed to mean in this context?

I found this explanation about the symbolism of power in the Lord of the Flies
book:

Quote
Dancing would normally be a symbol of joy, pleasure, and of community.
- 11 -
However, in the novel it instead becomes a decoy, not seeing or feeling the fright on the
island. When the members of Jack’s group are scared, they dance around the fire. When Jack
feels that fear starts to grow among the boys, he gets them to dance. For example, in one
situation of the novel a thunderstorm is approaching: “The flickering light became brighter
and the blows of the thunder were only just bearable. The littluns began to run about,
screaming. Jack leapt on to the sand. ‘Do our dance! Come on! Dance!’” (Golding 161).
Focusing on something else, it gives the boys the feeling of not being alone and therefore
takes away their fears (Gregor and Kinkead-Weekes 34). But they also dance in connection
with the hunt. They do this either before or after the hunt, but it has always the same pattern.
They scream, shout and dance. The dance is like a role play, or an Indian war dance. One boy
is the sow and the others hunt him down while they scream, laugh and try to stab the boy with
their spears. One important slogan is screamed and sung each time, because it is like Jack’s
tribe’s sacred words: “Kill the beast. Cut his throat. Spill his blood” (Golding 152). By
analyzing only the verbs in this saying it is clear that the shouting leads to violence and
destruction. These are words of power and dominance, the words of a dictator.

Why would we grant you such privileges? Why do you appeal for dominance over our collectivity?
