New Zealand is a country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean consisting of 2 main islands, both marked by volcanoes and glaciation. Capital Wellington, on the North Island, is home to Te Papa Tongarewa, the expansive national museum. Wellington’s dramatic Mt. Australians call New Zealand "The Shaky Isles".
The Te Papa museum has a fancy system for isolating the building from ground movement, with mats of rubber, steel and lead cylinders. Part of visiting the museum is to look underneath at the Earthquake protection. This is a wise precaution, as the building is on reclaimed land, close to the major fault zone that runs the length of the country.
