Title: How did we find out about the Big Bang?
Post by: katieHaylor on 05/07/2018 08:17:47
M asks:

How did humans find out about the Big Bang? And how did we predict that the Big Crunch will happen in the future?

Can you help?

A Catholic Priest Georges LemaƮtre who was a mathematician proposed the Big Bang Theory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Lema%C3%AEtre

The big crunch is now thought to be unlikely. Space has been found to be expanding at an accelerating rate, in fact the distance between our solar system and the outer edges of the universe is increasing at around 3c.

Inflation theory has grown out of Big bang theory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_inflation

How can the distance increase at 3c? That means that objects are moving away from each other at the speed at least 1.5 times higher than the speed of light.

They aren't actually moving away from each other. Space is expanding between them. The speed of light limit on matter thus does not apply.
