Consider the following illustration to answer your question using a spin 1 particle such as a neutron. In the absence of a magnetic field, the Schroedinger equation (SE) for a neutron is just the SE for a free particle.  However, if a magnetic field is present, one has to add to the SE the term accounting for the interaction between the magnetic moment of the neutron and the magnetic field.
