The only rules we have are those contained in our forum acceptable usage policy https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=8535.msg99452#msg99452

Some key points:
we cannot, amongst other things, host material that is obscene, that constitutes harassment,  that promotes terrorism, that is racist, or that constitutes a breach of copyright.

Keep it family friendly, all ages view here

Be safe, we advise no personal data

No spam. That includes promoting your own business or pet theories:
- The site is not for the promotion of business interests, or other personal ventures.  The only exception to this is where the advertisement is supplied by the owners of the forum to further their own business interests.
-The site is not for evangelising your own pet theory.  It is perfectly acceptable that you should post your own theory up for discussion, but if all you want to do is promote your own idea and are not inviting critical debate about it, then that will not be acceptable.
- It is not acceptable simply to post material onto this forum that you have posted elsewhere, except where the post is specifically pertinent to an ongoing thread.  If you start a thread with a post that is for all practical purposes the same as you have posted elsewhere, we will generally assume that you are evangelising, and will act accordingly.

Hi, I'm Amanda.
I'm an artist.
I think art the highest application of our mental faculties.
That isn't to say that art is more important than eating properly, having a good work ethic, or improving the lot of others - but rather that all those things are important so that people can have the ability to pursue artistic expression and appreciation.
I fond of different sketches and draw everywhere with my little designer's notebook.

Hello everyone!
I'm new to this forum.
I'm looking forward to interesting discussions, and hope to learn something new. I'm not a scientist, but I'm really interested in a lot of scientific topics.
I hope everyone is kind. :)

Hello.
I'm new here.   I have a formal education in Mathematics and study Science more as a hobby or interest.

I'm often looking for discussion rather than just quick answers to a question.
A quick glance at your (Naked Scientist) policies suggest all forum posts are presented as a question,  e.g. "Why is space isotropic?"  Can a post be presented as  "I'm seeking some discussion about why space is isotropic"   OR  is this website really intended to be just a Q&A service?

Really hoping for some good discussions.  Bye for now.

Hi'ya!

I'm a wannabe polymath on endless quest to learn more. And Oh boy is there a lot.

I was looking for a place to talk about publications, metabolism and climate science in a kind of research-centered fashion, so, here I am on this forum.

Peace! ♥

Hi @kaskas and welcome,

I'm a wannabe polymath on endless quest to learn more. And Oh boy is there a lot.
   Sounds good.

I was looking for a place to talk about publications, metabolism and climate science in a kind of research-centered fashion, so, here I am on this forum.
At least some of this should be possible.   I'm not staff and I don't set the rules, however, reasonable attempts to do these things seem to be acceptable:
   1)   Ask questions   or   answer and contribute to existing posts.
   2)   Seek genuine discussion.

Officially, all posts in the main sections should be phrased as questions.   Even if you're just seeking discussion it helps to do this because it opens the door for discussion and shows that you're not just creating a monologue.

   3)  If you really want to create a monologue, the "new theories" section and/or the "just chat" section have different standards and are much more tolerant.   Although you could also just put it on another website entirely.  This is a forum, so if you don't want discussion what's the point in putting an article in here anyway?

Conversely, things that won't be very popular and might be stopped by the moderators immediately include advertising.   You said "I was looking for a place to talk about publications..."  if that is just your own publications or articles then that could be considered as advertsing.   If you are seeking opinions on your own articles or very new ideas that aren't currently established as main stream science then that is almost precisely what the "New Theories" sections is intended for.   However, if you're seeking discussion based on existing and well established science then the main sections might be a better place.

Finally you mentioned discussion  "...in a kind of research-centered fashion....".   I would not want to put you off, the forum could certainly use some additional members of all abilities.    However, one of the moderators recently advised me that their average level of answer or response is aimed at an audience who are not assumed to be graduates in any sort of Science.   Some of the users will engage at a higher level but not all.

Best Wishes.

Thanks for your welcome.

But why did you think I was going to advertise? Would I introduce myself if I was going to spam? What a strange intro. Gives me a really strange vibe, like: "your postings are not welcome here in advace, go away."

Hello, I am a biologist (former), social worker, and was admin at the now defunct sciencechatforum dot com.  Moved on to scienceforums dot net, which has been down several days, so am glad to discover this clean well-lit place.  And already spotted several familiar names (hello, Geordief and Janus) among the itinerant science junkies.  My interests range wildly around the domains of science and philosophy, but have particular interest in AI, cognitive science, climatology, atmospheric physics, ecology, and why cats put up with us.  I am generally supportive of the Oxford comma.
