Title: What kind of metal in this Alum Shale?
Post by: enanthate on 13/09/2018 08:09:27
Hi,

Found this piece at an alum shale dig site in downtown Oslo. I noticed these tiny nuggets of metal in the shale. Any idea what kind of metal it is?

Pyrite, or Fool's Gold. The cubic form is the real give-a-way. Black shales like this are commonly deposited in anoxic conditions, making iron sulfides more likely to form than iron oxides.
