I have spent two days trying to get the latest update 18990 to run it ran fine on my spare computer but my main office machine crashed the message "IRQL not less or equal".
The two computers are virtually identical so what was happening ?
I interchanged memory chips, SSD video card etc to no effect eventually the penny dropped that it was the USB adapter cable to the old 1995 LASERJET 4 M printer despite a long hunt I could find no drivers for this device by luck this printer also has a RS232 input so I was able to use a readily available cable and driver to connect it and it now runs fine

Well done you for sorting it out; most people would have given up and called for help at the first inkling of trouble!
I have to say that earlier this week Windows did an update on one of my studio computers (admittedly a very "vintage" machine) and it took ages and then refused to restart; luckily a hard reset trigger the software to "rethink" and (half an hour later of hard disk grinding) it came back to life...

Did windows boot? If so, when did it crash? Does the office machine BIOS, have a legacy USB option?
-
I thought I would use low cunning and copy the relevant drivers from a system that runs fine into the new system but they are blocked.
I will force them in with the aid of LINUX tomorrow I really hate it when the computer says you cant do that you are not important enough.
I will just work it out then they will post a fix!, lots of people are complaining about it and lots of conmen are trying to make killing selling run of the mill software

It displays the lock screen but as soon as I enter a pin it crashes, If I pull out the printer cable USB every thing works fine !
-
Have you ever been into the BIOS of the machine? Some have a legacy USB option that can be selected. That might help. Just an option, you have solved the problem.
-
Its not a BIOS problem its just an extremely bug ridden program that they have foisted on us to test,
I have ditched it for the moment there are plenty of other things I should be doing !!!

I have given up running ver18990 on the Office computer as I need the printer running well just sticking with ver18985 but on the spare that I mostly use for Facebook and watching motor racing ver 18990 runs fine.
The built in antivirus seems so good on both that I have abandoned Malwarebytes as it makes the finding of URL,s painfully slow even when the Microsoft antivirus is completely switched of.
