Title: Are altered/modified minerals classifeds as new minerals?

If a minerals such as serpentine has been altered/modified during a major impact event, will it be classified as a new mineral when found today?

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. Old minerals are commonly destroyed and new minerals formed during both alteration (where minerals are altered or changed due to hydrothermal activity) or metamorphism (where one mineral is metamorphosed into new minerals due to heat and pressure).

I was doing some research on impactites which are minerals that have been altered, modified or morphed during a major impact event. Quartz that have been altered/modified is called coesite and couple other names so I was wondering if a mineral such as serpentine or jasper was also altered/modified during such an event, would they be classified as new minerals?
