Title: to that guy who says animals don't have feelings
Post by: Quantumcat on 30/03/2004 11:48:05
At my new host family's place, there is a donkey (who belongs to them) and a pony (who belongs to the neighbour) but that live in the same field. Before the family moved into the house the pony had been alone for about five or six years. (if you know anything about animals you should know they aren't very happy being alone) Plus, it was old then, about 25 years old. The donkey moved in then I suppose the pony was a bit happier. It's 35 years old now. On the weekends we take the donkey for a walk. Last weekend we tried to just take the donkey and not the pony, because he is slow and walks with a bit of a limp and walking probably isn't so good for him anymore. But, when we led the donkey out and closed the gate, then started walking away, the pony started trotting up and down the fence line, neighing loudly, then pushed against the fence with his forequarters and seemed to be trying to push the fence down. He probably would have kept going until he'd ripped his front open. Trotting for him is probably painful because he very very rarely does it, so obviously the poor thing was really really sad and distressed ! Another time the donkey was walking behind without a leadrope, and decided to go into the garden of a house, the pony realised he wasn't behind anymore and tried to push me over to go back to him, we had to push him and pull him to keep him going (the donkey would come when he realised we weren't going to wait for him) and he made lots of noise telling his friend to come back. So you can see that animals really do have feelings and can definitely feel the bond of friendship !!!!! (just like humans)

uh okay, actually, animals have instincts and get acustomed to being in a "group", i'm sure they know what lonliness is, and what abuse is, but to have our reason, logic, imagination, love and hate,i don't think they are that much like us, but i see what you mean[:)]

I WILL RULE THE WORLD, so suck up now before its too late(ha ha ha ha ha)

Hi, arent we all just animals at the core?  Animals have reason and logic to suit their needs, as for imagination..well have you ever played with a cat and their toys?  Im sure they couldnt get that excited about a toilet role if they didnt imagine it was something else!  Lova and hate well if you can find some way to prove that animals dont have those you should get a prize, last time I asked an animal I had a bit of trouble understanding their reply....now if they spoke english... :¬)

You could also say that human feelings are the same as other animal's feelings, just slightly more complicated. There's nothing spiritual to them as he claimed...

well instinct and emotion are two different things, and you also have to consider that unlike animals not all humans run by their emotions, if i feel sad i can, if nothing outside interfears, can make myself become happy, this is not so with animals, and to me emotions are just some petty outlet to show what you are thinking, or what you want to think, such as deppression.  Some people are sad beacuse they want to be or mad becuase they want to be, animals with whaterver emotions they do have, are subject to them and cannot control them, humans are waaaaaaaaaaaay more complex, and for someone to say we are animal at core is to say that the theory of evolution is a fact...whew

I can't say that anything is fact, but I can say what I think, and that is that we are basically animals and we obey the laws of nature. Which means we have no free will, and everything we do has it's meaning.

Hi, again how do you know if an animal is happy or sad?  Maybe it's just faking it...  when your sad can you instantly make yourself happy again, I mean instantly, everytime? Isn't it more like that you *feel* sad and then if you dont want to be you use reason to break out of it or do something to change things.  I'm sure animals do the same things, just on a different scale.  When my cats are in bad moods they do different things that seem to break them out of it.  Sometimes they sleep which seems to take their minds off things, sometimes they just run about but afterwards their good again.

People can use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to change their thoughts and consequently their mood.  The more we think in a negative way, the more "beaten" those neural pathways become.  If we make a point of thinking positive thoughts, it exercises the positive neural pathways.  Energy follows the path of least resistence and our neural pathways apparently are no exception.  So it's a matter of consciously switching to positive thoughts until those are the most traveled pathways, and become the default pathways.  Not so different than computer cache memory.

I theorize that we can do the same thing for animals by giving them happy experiences to replace any previous trauma.
