Hi, as an immunisation nurse delivering nasal LAIV to thousands of children in various non clinical settings over the next few months, PHE have downgraded PPE to just a mask. I would be grateful for the scientific reasoning behind this decision when during lockdown we were wearing gowns, aprons, gloves, mask and visors. We also will not be washing hands but using hand gel between children. My concern is that a mask is worn to protect others but as children will not be wearing a mask and inevitably sneeze and cough during this nasal procedure and possibly asymptomatic of COVID symptoms- how are we being fully protected with just a mask?
I am surprised that a mask and visor is not considered the bare minimum for us as is mandatory by hairdressers, beauticians and tatoo artists?
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you

The first rule of dealing with any hazard is to assume it is present.
Surprisingly, https://www.hse.gov.uk/coronavirus/assets/docs/face-mask-equivalence-aprons-gown-eye-protection.pdf suggests that a certified and well-fitted fluid-resistant surgical mask is adequate, but does require gloves and aprons, and an employer's published risk assessment for eye protection.
That said, the guidance changes from day to day and you would be well advised to contact your Union safety rep and keep up to date with the HSE website.
Your employer is responsible for specifying and providing any PPE beyond the clothing that the tax inspectors consider necessary for "indoor comfort and decency".

You would have to ask PHE.

The only scientific reason I can think of, is that they don't know how long immunity will last. This way they'll find out. Sorry to be so cynical.

What immunity is conferred by not wearing adequate PPE? This is the real world, not Trumpland.

Sorry misread the post I thought this was the PPE recommendations for a nurse who had been vaccinated
