Title: What makes it go Faster & Slower?
Post by: Zer0 on 07/03/2021 20:45:35
Jumboo Dumboo (aged 4 ½) Asks,
🍭

What makes the Earth go Faster & Slower in Orbit around the Sun.
🤔

P.S. - The Kid knows the orbit is Elleptical.
Perihelion & Aphelion are also Understood concepts.
Centrifugal & Centripetal forces are in grasp.
👍
(A Short & Simple & Sweet answer is humbly requested)
🙏

Crikey, you seem to have produced a child-genius.  Or you're making it up.

At any point not at Perihelion or Aphelion, the path of the orbiting thing is not tangential to the force being exerted by the orbited thing, and thus there is a component of that force that either adds to or subtracts from the current velocity vector of the orbiting thing. This changes its orbital speed.

This is especially noticed with coments or with rocks tossed from tall buildings, both of which go into very elliptical orbits and thus go faster quite noticably.  Unfortunately for the rock, it cannot complete its orbit becaue the ground often gets in the way, but it would be true if dropped from a sufficiently tall building.

Why should an object slow down, when it gets further away from a central "attracting" body.

Shouldn't the object go increasingly faster, as it escapes from the "attraction" of the central body?

No, because it has to give up kinetic energy in exchange for the gravitational potential energy it gains climbing away from the central body.  This decrease of KE is exhibited by a loss of speed.

So We meet again..& thanks for your input.

Hello @Janus
🙏

What if i picture the following phenomenon as an uneven heighted track...
Perihelion is at the lower end(ground level) whereas Aphelion is at the higher end(first floor)

Hence, the car named Eartha moves faster while travelling towards Perihelion as it's low, hence momentum is gained due to the tracks inclined curvature..

& Then when it speedily curves thru & starts to move towards Aphelion, the higher end of the track..it loses little momentum as it has to climb up thru the inclined curvature of the track..

So while climbing up, KE is decreasing..but just like in a rollercoaster..the PE stored value is increasing..& then when it comes down..PE releases & decreases & KE again increases.

P.S. - for some odd reason, such a simple phenomenon seems soo inexplicably hard to understand...but say if an anology of Uphill & Downhill is introduced..it would make it soo moch more easier for JD to understand the concept.

That could be a good approach.
Here's a visual aide that might help

Hi!
🙂

Yes indeed, it is a good approach as it makes the concept graspable & much easier to understand... especially when one is not well versed with technical jargons.
👍
(which are a must nowadays to understand the complex nature of the universe)

Besides, as the far as the concept of Gravity is concerned, hypothetical theories are well defined but Space Time Curvature is Something which still isn't carved or set in stone.
✌️
Most do Not still get how Gravity works, hence just a lil bit of freedom should be allowed for a layman to absord it in.

JANUS... I've observed you making certain remarkably extraordinary calculations at times in certain OPs.
👌
If one wishes to evolve or grow into the field of Mathematics, what would you suggest should one work on or study after the basic +-*/ functions are learned.
Like what comes next?
🤔

& Another rather absurd question if i may...i have Rarely ever seen You create an OP or ask questions...may i know why is that so?
(Do u really know everything bout everything)
😊

Anyways as always...Appreciate your inputs, they are illuminating!
👍

P.S. - Thank You!
🙏

Why don't you try a Solar System simulator - you can play God, and create your own!

After playing around for while, you get the feel of planets speeding up as they approach the Sun, and slowing down as they move away.

Google "Gravity Simulator".
This one runs for me (and plays annoying music), but you would need to read the instructions on how to place stars and planets.

Far from it.  It is just that when I have a question, I tend to try and look things up for myself.  I often find that, while looking for the answer to my question, I end up learning other things as well or at the very least find out where I can find the answers to other questions.

@evan_au
Hey!
🙋

Thanks for the Wonderful tip.
👍

But i Really Dislike playing God Mode games/simulators...they are Booring & surely God must be pretty Boored by now too.
🙏
Besides, i Really Like hanging around with you bunch of Scholars.
Just reading thru all you folks posts(most of em) i get to learn soo much bout sooo much.
👍
(By d way, EVAN, ur posts are precise & to the point & also contain fun facts... I'm Absolutely Sure it takes alot of time to create such things, U seem to contributing quite alot n very Nicely...So plz keep up d gud work n i Really Appreciate it)
Here's a treat 4 ya...🍭

@Janus
Hi again!
😊

Wow!
U did not misunderstand my words.. that's a pleasant surprise.
Lemme explain...
After i asked U as to why U rarely ever create OPs...i felt U might think I'm tryin to act smart or somethin with ya.
I forgot to type in a disclaimer stating " i am Not questioning U as to how come ur soo Smarty U never ask stuff, & neither am i suggesting that U should ask Stuff ".
🙏

But...utter surprise, U did not Misunderstand & so Wonderfully just answered my curious inquiry.
😇
That does Not happen with me much out here, mostly I'm perhaps taken to be a troll or sumthin.
Very good on ur part, Tankz!
🍭

Hmm...Simple Algebra it is now.
Imma on it.
👍

You know, i too am habitual to seek answers for myself.
I mostly rely on GooG or Wiki..but it hardly ever works.
😑
For me, all of it's Just graffiti on d wall.
I cannot have a conversation with the wall...& I feel it's futile to break my head on d wall.

Hence then i jump in here & voila...
I get soo many inputs..
Yeaaa, sum of em r meanies & bullies...(Yes, im referring 2 U 😉, U know whoo U r Rite 🤫, now shush! 🤭)...but most r sweety & anyways i get d answers which matters the most for Mee!
👻

P.S. - The OP stands answered hence time to Stop elongating it, unless anyone has more doubts or anything new to add.
