Genetics and Lebanese Behavior:
Does Genetics affect the Behavior of the Lebanese?
BY SUHAIL JALBOUT
Most Lebanese, whether they are residing inside or outside Lebanon, are baffled as to why their fellow countrymen cannot agree among each other on an arising matter, and why they are always in dispute. The most amazing phenomenon is that in the few cases when they do agree on a matter, their honeymoon does not last long. One really wonders if there is a specific reason completely out of their control that forces them to react in this manner. Is it possible that changes to the Lebanese genetics have occurred in the past which led to this behavior?
It is well established that the brain controls the human body through bioelectrical signals. If damage occurs to a certain part of the human body, artificial electrical signals can be used to repair the damage. For example: a pacemaker is implanted in the chest or abdomen to regulate the rhythm of the heart and a neurostimulator is usually implanted under the skin , near the collarbone, to relieve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, One wonders then whether there is a connection between these bioelectrical signals and the human genes.
Eric Kandel, the 2000 Nobel Prize winner for Medicine, discovered that the learning process causes signals to be transmitted into the DNA of nerve cells. Those signals can turn certain genes ON and other genes OFF. He also showed that change does not only occur in the brain (Neuroplasticity), but change can also affect inherited genes.1 Based on this extraordinary research, it is obvious that the brain had an important role in the evolution of modern man. Most probably it sends electrical patterns of biochemical origin to genes to modify or change certain aspects of the human body during the process of evolution, a process that takes generations to happen. Here are some examples that can be explained by the communication between the brain and the genes:
• The reason why modern man lost most of the hair that used to cover the body of his ancestors is that the brain realized that man changed his lifestyle.
• The reason why modern man has a redundant appendix is because the brain realized that man changed his diet.
• The reason why the human embryo loses its tail when it develops into a fetus is because the brain realized that man became erect.
• The reason why the present young human generation is losing their wisdom teeth is because the brain realized that man changed his diet.
For the brain to communicate with the genes, addressable communication, a method of transmission, is necessary. Consequently, the brain transmits appropriate electrical signals to the cells that contain the desired addressable genes. The transmission of data between the brain and the genes could be either, by pulses of electrical currents, or by pulses of electromagnetic fields, or by both.
From the forgoing, it is evident that the brain sends bioelectrical signals to control the human body and to communicate with the genes. However, it is known that genes effect the behavior of human communities. They do not specify behavior directly, but rather encode molecular products that build and govern the function of the brain through which behavior is expressed. Alterations to gene expression are coordinated by the brain according to environmental changes and adaptation to new external conditions. This explains to corporal changes previously mentioned. Consequently, one could hypothesize that if humans follow a certain behavior for a long time, no doubt it will affect the brain causing genetic changes. Hence, is it possible that the present Lebanese behavior is due to genetic changes that befell their ancestors?
The coastal cities of Lebanon (Tripoli, Byblos, Beirut, Sidon, and Tyr) have natural borders. Each city has mountains in the east, sea in the west, a river to their north and a river to their south. Thousands of years ago, the mountains of Lebanon were much higher covered with cedar, pine, and oak trees. Due to the high mountains and thick forests, rain and snow fell heavily in winter flooding the rivers below. As a result, land communication between the coastal cities was almost impossible. The only possible route would have been via the sea. This may have been the reason boat and shipbuilding, using Cedar wood, flourished and became a legend. The ships were not only used to sail the sea between the port cities, but they were also used for trade throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Because each city was an independent self-governed city-state, they often came into conflict with one another in addition to sever trade competition leading to conflicts and sometimes to bloody wars. This may be the beginning of the modern behavior. What increased the division among the city-states were the conquerors who took advantage of it. The strategic location of the city-states has made it a valuable target for numerous civilizations, kingdoms and empires (total about 15), to conquer the city-states throughout the history of Lebanon until its independence.2 There was no need for the conquerors to apply the policy of “divide and rule” because the city-states were already divided. Whenever the inhabitants of the city-states join forces, the conquerors played on their division to indulge them back into conflict Therefore, one could argue that their prolonged dispute for thousands of years must have caused changes in their genes, which, in turn, became part of the Lebanese social behavior.
If the Lebanese uncontrollable lack of agreement is genetic, then a cure must be found.
There are four fundamental forces that determine the physical behavior of everything in our universe. These forces are: (1) Gravitational forces, (2) Electromagnetic forces, (3) Strong nuclear forces, and (4) Weak nuclear forces. Atoms and sub-atomic particles interact with each other through these four forces to present the universe as we see it. However, there is a fifth force that Einstein mentioned in a letter to his daughter. He wrote:
“If instead of E=mc^2, we accept that the energy to heal the world can be obtained through love multiplied by the speed of light squared, we arrive at the condition that love is the most powerful force there is because it has no limits. Love is light that enlightens those who give and receive it. Love is gravity, because it makes some people feel attracted to others. Love is power, because it multiplies the best we have, and allows humanity not to be extinguished in their blind selfishness. Love unfolds and reveals. Perhaps we are not yet ready to make a bomb of love, a device powerful enough to entirely destroy the hate, selfishness and greed. However each individual carries within them a small but powerful generator of love whose energy is waiting to be released.”3
No doubt, love is the force that can heal Lebanon because it is the most powerful force in the universe. One possible application could be derived from cell division. If a person persuades another person we will have 2, and the 2 into 4 and so on. By the end of the 22nd step the number becomes 4,194,304 individuals which represents the present population of Lebanon. It is about time for all Lebanese to switch ON their innermost positive love generator and switch OFF their negative initiator.

Most Lebanese, whether they are residing inside or outside Lebanon, are baffled as to why their fellow countrymen cannot agree among each other on an arising matter, and why they are always in dispute.
The same is true of everyone.
It has nothing to do with being Lebanese.

I am not aware of the correlation you presented for the Lebanese. However, for the sake of argument, if we assume this is true, each generation may being setting the same example for the next, thereby teaching the behavior, causing it to perpetuate over time. Some cultures are very close knit and therefore members will ignore outside influences and become molded internally by their own culture. A homogeneity can appear that will be the trade mark of the clan.
As an example, children of an abusive household often become the victim or abuser later in life, thereby passing on the family traditions. After many generations of abuse, one may be tempted to call this conditioning, genetic and thereby something beyond control, since one feels stuck in the loop. But this is often due to lots of external peer pressure by those who enjoy and are good at the long standing tradition.
In terms on a variation of evolution and natural selection; DNA based, if any culture decided being belligerent had a social advantage, i.e, war, then a cultural selection process may become activated, so the most belligerent are selected, to set them as the ideal for all. Those chosen to represent the class of behavior, may actually has greater genetic propensity toward being that way. it comes easy to them. These prime DNA based examples, may help them offer the best social examples for collective education.
A good example of all these dynamics, within western cultures, is connected to the definition of female beauty and how this changes with time. In the past century, the definition began with full figured women, went to skinny, then to athletic, and now back to full figure. In each case, there were natural specimens; DNA based, who typified the trend, naturally.
The supermodel is born with the right DNA for her generational trend. She would be held up on a pedestal and used as a prop for social conditioning. The other women will then try to merge with the ideal, via diet, exercise or eating, depending on the standard. There is also social shaming, designed to push the herd toward homogeneity; carrot and stick. The net affect is mostly learned behavior with some selection; DNA, at the top, to hold up as examples of the desired conditioning.
The super model who does not have to wear makeup and who still looks beautiful at 60 years old was a natural beauty specimen; DNA. She was hyped and rewarded to create a cause and affect. Other women will buy all the merchandise needed to simulate this example. Makeup can go a long way. Men will also participate in this training, by going along with the hype, until the game is played by all. it can then may look like DNA to the untrained eye.
Typically, those who have to struggle the most to fit in with an artificial homogeneous cultural standard, get tired sooner of the extra effort needed to be homogeneous. They may choose to leave it behind. If you are naturally thin, but have to be heavy to be stylish, this may not work out easily or it may require overcompensation. Either way it gets old. This may start the need for a new fad. Your topic suggests you are tired to the current Lebanese beauty pageant and would prefer a different set of social ideals that are more positive for all.
