The military make very good rail guns.
(so do some amateurs).

They design them using the known laws of electromagnetism.
And, since they work, those laws must be correct.

So anything you are saying must either agree with those laws- in which case it is redundant, or it disagrees with them, in which case it is wrong.

So, which is it?
Was your post pointless or wrong?
There are videos on YouTube where it is shown that the presented set-up doesn’t work.
There is also this one, which shows that it does work.

The rail-gun has magnets on both sides of the iron rod
Liar,
It does not.

To understand the working principle of a homopolar motor, first and foremost you have to understand that besides the electric current in a current-carrying wire there is also a magnetic current (which the contemporary science calls magnetic field). The two currents are inseparably bound to each other very similar to the water swirling current and the cavitation spiral current which an underwater propeller creates. The water swirling current corresponds to the electric current, whereas the cavitation spiral current corresponds to the magnetic current.
Spreading misinformation since 2019!

I remember there was a Canadian scientist who developed an modern conventional cannon that could launch projectiles into space. It was the mother of all cannons. The breakthrough was the precision manufacturing of the huge barrel.

Before the first Gulf War, Saddam Husain who was the leader of Iraq, tried to buy one of these cannons to shoot at Israel from Bagdad. After a few days of news, all further news of this interesting piece of technology disappeared. It is hard to tell who commandeered the invention, and/or implemented the cone of silence.

The inventor was pitching his canon as a way to send raw materials into space to build space platforms. He claimed he could launch sturdy metal components into space at a fraction of the cost of using a rocket to lug steel components. One would then need to collect these pieces, and use them to assemble the platform. It made sense to me, but the range also had military applications that could alter the game for smaller countries.

Even when you are right, you are talking Bull.

The breakthrough was the precision manufacturing of the huge barrel.
That's not the whole story, by a long shot.
It is hard to tell who commandeered the invention, and/or implemented the cone of silence.
Nobody sequestered the invention.
There's nothing to stop you making one.

It's just that as a weapon of war, it's pretty useless. You can only point it at one target, (it's too big + heavy to move). And you only get a few shots before (1) the barrel is too worn to use and (2) your enemy bomb the **** out of it (and you).

That's fine if you are a religious  fanatic, but not much use otherwise.

It's an interesting (and "cheap" by space standards) way to get stuff into space, but most of the things we want in space would be destroyed by the "shock" of the launch.
