Title: what was the first mrna vaccine?
Post by: jfoldbar on 21/07/2021 01:53:20
i got reading about history of vaccines, and learned that we seem to be at a new age of vaccine manufacturing. now using mrna vaccines.
im curios, is covid the first of this type of vaccine, or have there been other vaccines made via mrna?

The covid 19 vaccine was the first mRNA vaccine used in large scale phase III trials.

Research into mRNA vaccines has been underway for about 30 years.

The Gates Foundation pumped tens of $million into the research, in the hope of making flexible vaccines for neglected tropical diseases.
- COVID-19 was the impetus that brought them to mass market
- Ironically, the current generation of mRNA vaccines are not heat stable, and need to be kept in extreme cold conditions, which rules them out for most tropical countries
- But I'm sure researchers are working on ways to stabilise them
