Title: Is the universe is basically a big battle royal game?
Post by: Tony186 on 23/09/2021 15:06:53
Hey guys, I recently read a great book call Remembrance of Earth’s Past, there is this theory in there call the dark forest theory which stated that the universe is basically a big battle royal game, it is a very intriguing to me, I just want to know are there any paper or scientific examination on this theory, thank you

Generally scientific papers are not written about science fiction books.

Maybe just a very simple examination? Cause I remember the reason I first read the book is because I saw some doctor’s paper on it? Can’t really remember

dark forest theory
I doubt there are any papers written about this hypothesis per se, but it seems like a plausible hypothesis.  Many people have said it is a bad idea to broadcast our civilizations existence to the cosmos, I believe Hawking was one of these people.  I personally don't think large scale interstellar space travel is plausible so it isn't anything to worry about, but what the hell do I know?

Isaac Arthur made a video about dark forest theory (among many other interesting astrobiology topics). It's been a long time since I've watched it, but if I recall correctly, he concludes that it would be very difficult for a highly-advanced civilization to hide its presence (at least from another, highly-advanced civilization that was looking for it).

I think that as a theory, it is pretty interesting, but there is not enough reality in it. As mentioned earlier, the chance that one race can control everything and go unnoticed is almost zero. And if the question is put in such a way that they are just observers, then the chances of the truth will grow, but then it simply means that there is a planet whose development is many times higher than ours, and we will learn about them only when they give signs. In general, there is something to think about. I like that in books, such ambiguous theories can be both empty and real. For some 70 years, we did not know what DNA is, and now we are researching how to change it so that some diseases disappear. A biographical book about how DNA was discovered called The Double Helix. In general, I want to believe in some theories, otherwise, life becomes boring)

all radio signals are background noise after 2 light years.  no one can see us. anyway we have 128000 nukes to destroy the attacking invaders and she shall blow them out of the stars.

It certainly seems that any 'manned' interstellar travel is all but impossible so there is nothing to worry about.
However, if there was a civilization that could somehow assemble an interstellar invasion force, they would be so technologically advanced that we would not have a ghost of a chance.   It would be like the current US armed forces fighting the Roman legions.

Worth noting in that respect that the US military was beaten in Vietnam by a bunch of peasants with sharpened sticks. Similar fate for British, Russian and US adventures in Afghanistan in the last 150 years or so.

Making up a silly strawman does not strengthen your position.  Do you not realize that North Vietnam had one of the larger fighting forces in the world at that time and were being supplied weapons by the USSR.
Sharpened sticks... ::)
