Two days ago our computer locked up with a badly written obvious ransomware demand. I switched it off and on again but it was stilled locked. Next day it switched on ok so I disconnected the modem and we downloaded all important files. Then I reconnected the modem and here I am online again. This is a very old computer, on it's last legs and I wouldn't pay 10c to unlock it.

MBR bytes to fix or simple software in java instructions.

But I advise you to reset your OS to no longer have any problem.

Thanks for your suggestions but they are beyond my abilities/comprehension. With all important info downloaded I am going to replace it, it is well past it's useful life(windows 8).

Interesting that we sort of expect simple computers doing repetitive tasks to malfunction after about 10 years of sitting on a desk in an airconditioned office, but expect complicated humans to work pretty well (and even manufacture their own replacements) for at least 60 years doing really clever stuff in all weathers and environments. And then wonder why people don't trust selfdriving cars.

My reply has been messed with: I put in (windows eight) and now it appears as (windows+what looks a tiny grumpy face !!

Not messed with. It’s the way the forum sw interprets 8 followed by a ) if you leave a space between them it will work

Which seems to be a fair judgement.
