Post by: alancalverd on 15/03/2023 12:01:34: I think the word "professional" has been rather misused here. A poor effort, maybe 6/10 for a teenager but definitely a PhD fail.

Come to think of it, I doubt that "Ireland" has much to do with it either. Schools and universities in the land of Shaw, O'Brien, Donleavy, Joyce..... demand the very highest standards of English prose.

Post by: alancalverd on 24/03/2023 06:09:59: Shouldn't be a problem since the statement is obvious and published in every university prospectus: a PhD is awarded for the conclusion of a substantial period of ORIGINAL research. Slightly more difficult to determine originality in the arts rather than sciences, but "Shakespeare wrote lots of popular plays and introduced several catchphrases into everyday English" probably wouldn't qualify.
