Title: Merry Christmas (with trivia and a joke).
Post by: Eternal Student on 25/12/2023 02:22:27
It's just gone midnight where I am. So I would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas.
Minor Note: I don't wish to cause offence to anyone of any religon. If you don't recognise Christmas as any special occassion, that's fine. I would just wish you a good day.
Piece of trivia: Friedmann is famous for his work in Cosmology. The name Friedmann can be written in many ways. It is not a spelling mistake to write it as Friedman (with one n) or as Fridman (no e) and you can find all of these variations used in the literature. The scientist was Russian and the name should be written in the Cyrillic alphabet (and if this forum supports it then the only correct way to spell the name is as follows: Фри́дман ). A direct transcription to the Latin alphabet is then problematic. The other scientists working in this area at the time were German and they found that the sound comes over more accurately when it is written as Friedmann and so that spelling became prevalent.
Joke: Why is Eibniz an acceptable spelling of the mathematician who inventend calculus?
..... (this one takes a moment to think about - but when you see it it will sleigh you)......

AAAAAGH!
But congratulations for penetrating the mysteries of this forum. How odd that it replicates Cyrillic characters perfectly, but not UK currency, degrees Celsius, or pretty much any other symbol!

Hi ES, concerning your statement of fact , re calculus, our colleague Neilep might argue that Eweton was an equal contributor to this giant step although we do not use his notation in general.
