Little Comet needs his hooves re-shaped. One of them in particular is very long & it's causing him to stumble. Yesterday we noticed him limping slightly on that leg. We've been trying for weeks to get a farrier but they're all too busy at the moment so not taking on any new clients. So, there's only 1 thing for it - I've got to do it.
I've never done farriering(?) before but I've seen it done a few times. Fortunately, Comet is small and very good-natured so I shouldn't have too much trouble with him. Plus I'm very good at hanging on to horses hooves when I need to; plenty of practice when picking stubborn horses' hooves.
I'll let you know how it goes (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Ffingers%2F1.gif&hash=6f8d26e69afae66714b7029f77c072d0)

Good luck! At last you'll be able to use that wierd bit on your Swiss army knife.....

Hey Doc.. You probably already know but be particularly careful around the frog of his hoof of you nicked that or cut it he could bleed to death.. It is a real big deal as I recall!!! I am pretty sure thats what our farrier said . Has Commet foundered or just needing a trim.. Is the hoof that is causing grief curled outward?? If it is It could be something in his diet causing it! Take a picture of his hoof or look up foundering in reference to a horse surely you know about this already!

Karen - I won't need to go anywhere near the frog. His hoof is extended forwards but not curled up. All it needs is rasping back to a proper length. I've checked it out and the hoof itself is not damaged, just too long.

You just want to see me get booted, don't you! [:(!]

That is the whole idea, right Karen?

Hi Doc
Did you get Comet walking painlessly once more - UPDATE NEEDED!

I'm going to do it on Saturday when I've got more time.

Keep us posted!

Will do

Well, I did it. Comet's hoof looks a lot better now & he was happily trotting around without stumbling. It took me about 20 minutes as I was taking things carefully, not having done it before.
But the biggest plus is that I didn't get kicked! [:)]

Poor thing ,having to stand on 3 legs for twenty minutes so a beaver can nibble at his hoves.:)
