Title: Building Bridges !..Is there a limit of span with todays technology ?
Post by: neilep on 12/08/2007 22:40:45
Does the technology exist that we could build a bridge to say....between the UK & USA ?

See the picture ?

[diagram=266_0]

As you can see I have already designed it !!

What materials ?....what kind of 'type ' of bridge will it be ?

In theory I don't see any reason why a pontoon bridge couldn't be built. It would be a bit difficult to drive across with high waves, though.

I don't think any other type would be possible due to the depth of the Atlantic.

Incidentally, Neil, did you know that the Humber bridge is so long it has to take the curvature of the Earth into account?

Cool !..Thanks ETH....No I did not know that about the Humber bridge !

I expect that in my bridge (patent pending) above there would be islands with retail , hotel,residential, commercial and social /community services too along the way....

Which country would have sovereignty over the islands? Or would they be independent?

Within certain boundaries they might adopt the sovereignty of the nearest country .....else they could be part of a northern hemisphere joint venture or a global conglomerate with the premise to bridging the entire planet !!

I like the idea but why have islands, why not underwater motels and shopping. along the way! Ohhh cool possibilities.. underwater parking garages with shuttle transports from there to motels etc.! Hummmm to drive 4 thousand or so plus miles across the top of the ocean it sounds intriguing also!I have only been on the golden gate and the oakland bridge that I can remember!

Why not making them a new nation, someting like "New Atlantis" ?

Not if you go by car, it's not. The trains are already knackered and dated. BUT, it's quick and hassle free. BUT, it's really expensive if you go for a 2 week period. BUT, it's quite cheap if you go for a day trip. SO, if you're going for a 2 week holiday, buy 2 day trip tickets and only use half! 80 quid instead of 400! Er, not that I've ever done it. Ever, Nope, not me.

you could build a bridge across the atlantic on the free floating structures they use for oil rigs as they stand high enough out of the water to keep the sea off the road yet the tubalar section under the water is designed in such a way that it keep the platform stable even in very high seas.[diagram=269_0]
