I have used Linux Slackware dual boot with XP((originally had IBM DOS6.22 then IBM DOS 7 all in 4Mb Partitions on a smaller 10.1Gb HDD)originally NT4 then Me) on my box i built: 450 Mhz 100Mhz FSB , 256RAM , 30Gb HDD , 32Mb graphics PCI , 128 kb modem , Audio card , 3 1/2 FDD 5 1/4 FDD .
The original Linux was Mandrake 7 ten 8...10 then Red Hat then Slackware. Suse 10.1 for a minute or two(450Mhz cyrix3 CPU).
Linux Magazine has Fedora 10 and Slackware 12.2 on the stands,

It should just about cope with being your firewall and Gateway, and do NATs for a moderately sized LAN.  You wouldn't really want to run any apps on it but then that's a Good Thing for firewall/Gateway/NATs boxes.
