In answer to the original question:  It depends upon your definition of what the marriage ceremony requires but because there was nobody else who could have married them, unless they married themselves, they must have been unmarried.

A Christian ceremony, no doubt.

Heh - I suppose that God could have married them, but wouldn't they have still needed a witness?

This question should be in another forum altogerther, but , in the interests of closing the timewasting discussion.
According to the bible they were married.
" For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
"
Since Eve is described as "his wife" they must have been married.

You see, the Devil really can quote scripture.

Is this posted in new theories?
Where is the theory?
Or is it just another stupid topic, in the wrong section of the forum, a science forum where the topic has nothing to do with science.

to quote Rosy
"More to the point, what on earth is this doing in a science forum?"

more to the point, why are the moderators, admin, allowing it? and why are they so slow to move it?

I think he  doesn't know where to discuss the topic

In my opinion, while most of the books in the Bible may contain an element of truth or be loosely based on actual events, the book of Genesis cannot be counted among them. I don't believe a reporter from the Daily Qfvggbh of the planet Zog came to witness and record the event, so who wrote the book, when, where, why and where did he/she/they get their information from?

It's probably also the case that translations from ancient scriptures are wrong. Adam probably meant Men, not an individual man. Likewise Eve meant Women, not an individual woman.

According to the Bible, Leviticus 18:6 & 20:11 - 14 for example, incest is a sin, so how could we all be descended from just one man and one woman with God being the instrument of the perpetration of that sin?

You might also consider the genetic horror of inbreeding over the 6000 years which the Bible seems to think is how long Mankind and this entire universe has existed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inbreeding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inbreeding)

Another reason why the Creation doesn't work.

The way I see it, but the bible is so vague you can see it how you like, God said "don't eat apples from the tree of knowledge." This meant "don't start playing with each others naughty bits as it will lead to full blown sex." Well snakes will be snakes and they did the dirty deed. Before this there was no need for marriage as marriage is for the soul perpose for having children but once they had bonked then god stopped them from being imortal and then they could have babies. Once they could have babies then marriage was introduced. So no, they didn't have sex before marriage because marriage wasn't invented. It is like saying "Lets go back to the drawing board" when you are inventing the drawing board. Enough said.

I am concerned about the inbreeding, are we all decended from the one couple?

My other big problem is that Adam and Eve only begat (biblical term) Kane and Abel (there was another son but he got murdered and there wasn't a huge list of suspects). I have to wonder who Kane and Abel had sex with as there was only one woman on the planet. I'm guessing a lot here but I guess homosex hadn't been part of gods seven days of activity, or six if you forget about his day off.

Was the apple tree a Granny Smith? That opens a whole new can of worms (or snakes). Is the bible meant to confuse us or just to be used as a door stop?

I think the vegetable-related foot-covering has got his twickers in a knist. Cain murdered Abel and eventually disappeared off into the land of Nod where he found himself a wife. The question has always been, if Adam & Eve were the first humans, how did Cain's wife get there? Was his wife non-human?

so plz be in limit of everything, because non related things have never got value.

Nazeer - 2 points:

1) If you notice, this topic is in "Chat" and so falls outside of the usual tight scientific remit from the other areas of the forum

2) Why should something not be said in case it "offends" someones belief system. Somehow religion has gained some sort of a trump card, where if you dispute a persons religious position, you are offending them. This is nonsense. Would you be offended if I had an alternate position about politics? I doubt it very much. So, no. People should be allowed to formally express their opinion, irrespective of someone else's beliefs, especially if it can be supported by evidence.

The biblical story tells that God forbade them to take the forbidden fruit, it does not say what that fruit is.

Does it say anywhere whether they had sex after they were married? Or did they just join the local bridge club.

In Genesis Abraham's son sees and immediately takes his wife, it seems at first sight. Adam could do no wrong, naked and in paradise, there was only one thing he could do wrong, his nature was perfect. In God's presence seeing his wife, or to be, it was surely mentioned to Elohim in some way, very ritual free, natural, and she was his, in God's will. Unless the tree of knowledge of good and evil meant sexual carnal knowledge, but I think it was actual fruit, not sex.

Wiki says that Adam had 33 sons and 23 daughters.

Christmas must have been hell for that poor man.

What would his credit card statement have been like????

56 birthday prezzy's, Christmas prezzy's, easter eggs..... sheesh!!! And what about the grandchildren??? How many of them did he have to buy for? Considering he lived to the ripe old age of 930, he must have spent all his later years in the local shopping mall.

The zeroth commandment that god gave to humankind was go forth and be fruitful but Jesus reputably free of sin is always depicted as being unmarried therefore breaking the most important commandment  ( which most human kind obey with an excess of enthusiasm )
According to the Torah Eve was the replacement for Adams first wife Lilith who refused to be subservient to Adam and left him.

The word is unknown to priests, politicians, or philosophers. It implies commitment and the possibility of moral refusal, two characteristics unbecoming to scavengers and parasites.

I think you are right.
Religious translations are usually done in the context of the time of the translator. For the King James version marriage hadnt taken on itís modern concept. You could be considered married either by having sex, exchanging gifts or tokens, or any promise witnessed by another. No formal ceremony was required in uk until 1753 marriage act - worth noting that it doesnít outlaw sex before marriage, thatís left to the Ďmoralí police force who believe they, or some other vague authority, should dictate how others live.

My thought is, Adam and Eve is a metaphor for early humans discovering themselves, and becoming aware of their environment, there is a point in history when humans started to settle the land and cease to be dependent on hunting and gathering, thus having more time to question why things are there, where they came from ect, to them, it must have been hard to believe all these things just evolved, ( something they obviously didn't understand) so they created the creator, well thats my simple understanding of it all !

The people who wrote the Bible didn't realise that their ancestors were any different from themselves.

Quote from: Ben Evans
Did Adam and Eve have sex before marriage?
No. Of course not. Why would they want to or need to? There was no concept of marriage at that time. Marriage means that you're bound to that person forsaking all others. Eve was created for Adam (so the story goes) and as such she was bound to him. There was no need to forsake all others because there wasn't any "others" in existence. And there also was no requirement by God to be married before they had sex. That came later.
