Title: Where do the Parakeets go?
Post by: Don_1 on 26/06/2009 08:22:22
I regularly see flocks of up to 25 Ring-necked Parakeets fly over my house. At dawn they fly approximately NNE and at dusk return on the same path SSW.

(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2F7%2F70%2FRose-ringed_Parakeets_%2528Male_%2526_Female%2529-_During_Foreplay_at_Hodal_I_Picture_0034.jpg&hash=035e4b3341b46d98cedee3a15438769b)

Their NNW direction takes them toward Essex, where they must have found good feeding grounds and the return SSW direction, toward Surrey, where they presumably roost.

In 2007, the RSPB estimated the London population of these immigrants at around 30k and projected a 50k population by 2010.

But where exactly do they feed and roost?

Or maybe they're trying to get away from the Old Fat Cat in Southampton

That must be very neat to see such beautiful birds fly over in large groups.  Are they noisy?

They do tend to squark quite a lot.
