Title: What are these SPAM posters about ?
Post by: neilep on 29/08/2005 19:50:26
I must have deleted 20 posts today and over the last few weeks many many many more.

The poster has an obscure name and always creates a post which comprises of just three or four words....the signature of the poster are three links to gambling sites.

They have even created their own threads....and in the space of just twenty minutes a new ' member ' has been created posting the same short succint meaningless posts...can anyone shed some serious light on this......?

The name is always comprises of letters and numbers...in this case the poster is called ' Book44 '

Are you able to track the profiles to thier IP addresses?
If so, are you able to block the source/sources?

VERY GOOD POINT Razor.....unfortunately their IP address indicates they're from all over the globe...and alas...I do not have the power to block them....but I doubt it would do any good if they are being automatically generated from all over the place.....but excellent thinking Razor....

All of the direct links posted are dead ends according to my computer, this is a tricky situation, whoever's doing this does'nt seem to have any goals to this mischief, unless it's spyware or a virus.

We know little info on these potential threats, all i can suggest is surveillancing it, monitor they're behaviours, but dont sweat it(would'nt think you would anyway), hopefully it's just some jacka$$ nerd with ALOT of time on his hands.

A spambot! Whee!
Title: Re: What are these SPAM posters about ?
Post by: daveshorts on 30/08/2005 17:24:42
Is there any common pattern within the posts that would make automatically blocking them work?
Title: Re: What are these SPAM posters about ?
Post by: memasa on 30/08/2005 17:45:22
Is there a pattern? Yes, the so called submitters are linked to gambling sites. A typical spambot.

I wish I knew how to block them...
Title: Re: What are these SPAM posters about ?
Post by: daveshorts on 30/08/2005 18:39:01
You could probably do it with a carefully designed regexp... but that would require rewriting the forum software - and I don't know how amenable it is to this..
Title: Re: What are these SPAM posters about ?

...but how do these spambots go through the registration process ?....that is one clever spambot eh ?

As part of the regisration process some sites send you an email with a link that has got to be clicked on in order to complete registration.
If this forum adopted this system could it prevent the use of spambots

Yep,

good point Michael.....if it perseveres much longer I'll mention it to El Supremo !!......it's true though, with this site...you don't have to have a legitimate email to register.....it's definitely worth a mention.

cheers

Nice try. But think again. It's easy to have a bot read an email and grab a link. Anything a human can do online a bot can do. The hardest thing is image recognition! You need some script which makes an image with distorted text that needs to be copied by hand to a text field. Some bots even have a go at getting around this!

What a pain. sorry you ahve had to put up with this crap Neil.

The best we can do is to engage the email validation for registration. But as has already been pointed out, it's not that difficult for spam programmes to surmount this obstacle.

Hi All

okay, new registrations must now validate via email.

We'll see what impact this has. If none, then we'll move up another gear which requires moderators to validate registrations before they can be used.

Feedback on the scale of the problem would be gratefully received.

Can you make a system which automatically checks every new profile's link list?
If the links contain words "gambling" or "poker" the profile is automatically cast into oblivion.

Most sites deal with this problem by having an obscure password which you fill in on the page before you post your details, this is in a format that bots cant read because its a picture of the letters, which look like they have been drawn roughly by someone. This eliminates the bots from the join up process, because the bots can't read it.

Thanks ukmicky for taking the trouble to look that up.

Since Neil reports that he's not seen any signs of trouble since we introduce email reg, then we may be okay at the moment, but if it becomes a pain again, maybe I'll introduce your solution.

Best

(argh, registration is a PITA [:(])

The Wikipedia has an article about CAPTCHA tests which is relevant here.  And a little scary - I think we're in a Turing test arms race, and the two ways it could easily go are internet becomes unusable vs. need to use government issued ID cards to prove you exist.  Pretty grim, eh?

When I had my own registration-based site I used to include an easy, random question in the email I sent to the applicant. No answer, no registration. I didn't have that many applications, though, so I could handle it all myself.
I don't know how easy it would be to automate the process but I would have thought that a small database with, say, 100 questions & answers, would suffice. I could write it without too much trouble in an "old-fashioned" programming language so I'm sure someone Chris knows could produce something PDQ.
