Title: melting spoons made from gallium metal
Post by: pcentauri on 17/12/2010 13:57:51
i came across this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIbYiO5BRYk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIbYiO5BRYk).. so there's ANOTHER use for gallium metal these days besides semiconductors lol [:D]

Next time I half-inch some teaspoons from the local cafe, I'll tell them they must be buying gallium spoons. "Honest Guv, I didn't filch yer spoons!"

The melting metal spoons are not necessarily made of Gallium, maybe something toxic ...

Quite a large proportion of gallium but a combination of other metals in small quantity

If someone swallowed the liquid metal which then solidified into an irregular lump in their stomach it would then have the same hazard potential as swallowing a solid object.

Gallium would remain molten in the stomach.
I suspect it would have the same effect as mercury which was used as a laxative (with a fairly small risk of mercury poisoning as it didn't stay there long).

Wood's metal (Bi, Pb, Sn and Cd) would be more of a problem. It would set in the gut and, in doing so it would release it's latent heat of fusion. Since the melting point is about 65C it would heat the local tissues to that temperature which is probably hot enough to cause damage.
Of course with that lead and cadmium in it, Woods' metal is also rather toxic.
