Title: Is purified water worse for your health?
Post by: thedoc on 12/12/2013 05:30:01
Theresa asked the Naked Scientists:
I have been told that drinking purified water is bad for you as it leaches out minerals from your body - is this true?

After the salesman's pitch and demonstration, I wanted that purifier more than ever, but my friend is convinced that it is just a ploy...

To purify or not to purify....that is the question.

Best regards,

What do you think?

It really depends on what is in your water, and what the source is.  Why do you want to "purify" it?  What are you doing to purify it?

You should be able to get most minerals from food.  Or, if you want, a multivitamin.

Chlorination has been used for years, without any adverse effects.

Some minerals may have a bad taste, or other effects.  But, other than lead, or some heavy metals, they generally aren't harmful.  If "clean", even silt may not be a problem.

"Hard Water" can make washing more difficult, or can stain clothing.

However, I'm not big on salt ion exchange systems.  Too much salt, and you can get rust.  Plus the expense of the salt.  And, if you are trying to modify sodium intake, then one shouldn't add salt to the water.

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with "clean" water.  But, you could also be paying for something you don't need.
