Title: How can I stop static building up on my body?
Post by: katieHaylor on 03/07/2017 17:30:42
Simon says:

I've had body static for a long time, how do I get rid of it and how do I stop it coming back?
It really affects my iPod and smartphone.

What do you think?

Static builds up in a dry climate when insulating materials rub together, and have no opportunity to discharge.

You can reduce this by:
- Using shoes that have conductive soles, so you continually discharge yourself.
- Using natural, rather than artificial fibers
- Ensure your clothing is made from a single type of fiber, instead of different fibers.
- Touch an earthed point such as a water tap before using your idevice
- Move to a climate with higher humidity.

Or buy yourself an earthing strop, like the ones that you occasionally see dangling off the backs of cars...

- Move to a climate with higher humidity.
Or maybe install a humidifier in your room.

They do exist ...

The ugly shoes are optional.

My god, I've seen everything now... I honestly thought I was being vaguely funny without for a moment thinking that someone had invented a real-life anti-static shoe discharger, or whatever it calls itself... (laughed very much over the comment about the shoes!)

The earthing-straps for people do have valid uses in the workplace : static electricity discharge can be a source of ignition where there is flammable dust/gas/vapour , and ESD can be terminal for computer-chips ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_discharge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_discharge)

Adjusting her sweater (@ 0:59) was a bad move ...

Indeed - I have a wrist-strop for when I'm doing electronics work. Just not seen the foot equivalent before!
