Title: Constructive Proposals.
Post by: Zer0 on 15/11/2017 02:06:39
Hello TNS,
A few Requests if I may.

Could we Please have a Mathematics Geometry & Algebra section ?
I've just started with understanding concepts/theories but simultaneously would also like to learn equations/formulas.   ➕➖✖➗

Can we Please have a Philosophy Epistemology & Metaphysics section as well ?
Although I've placed my mind on a strict scientific diet, but do like to indulge in a philosophical cupcake once a while.
 🍮

Also could a better mechanism be put in place of the current one in reference to Guests/Non-Members ?
I've noticed a lot of guests frequently visiting the forum but except for a open poll there ain't options where they could leave a mark, or make their opinions/views heard leaving them gagged.   😷

I know all of the above said is certainly asking for a bit too much, and I can completely understand if none of it can happen.

Thank You !   🙏

Secret Note - while walkin in, saying wat I wanted to n now on my way out I had shut my eyes tightly so I didn't see a thingy or two.   🙈
for a change, at least start wearing a tie or a hat. 👔 🎓 😝

Thanks for your points.

1) For the maths board, we'd be happy to consider this, but who will moderate / curate it? It needs someone suitably maths-savvy to keep an eye on it.

2) Ditto any other proposed boards.

3) For the guests situation: we operate on a compromise between user experience, protecting our valuable signed-up users and SPAM; if we open the forum to free-for-all guest posts then I don't doubt that people would make a lot of valuable contributions, but the level of abuse would inevitably sky-rocket, led by rogue links and spam. This is the reason that the bulk of the quality fora across the web operate on a registration and escalating privileges system, as we do here. It's a shame, but that's life I suppose. Unless you have a potential solution?

1) This Idea might take off in the Future, for now let's keep it under Hibernation.   👍

2) Yes this can work, n would be Real Fun!   👌

3) I completely understand this, let's Scrap this one. Fair Enough.   ✌

Hello Chris ☺

(1) I wanted to know what is TNS Forum Policy regarding the F word?
Considering its a minor/student friendly forum do you strictly remove/delete/beep/**** any reference to the F word or Mods take it with a pinch of salt n light heart?
If you do not allow any such words as f**k f***ing f***ed up but its too much work monitoring stuff in real time, I could Help with that, pease consider me for the job, I'm up for it. 👍

(2) Also I wanted to enquire as to is there a TNS Forum Policy in place or could one be implemented in the near future where Members are stopped/discouraged from mocking or making fun of heads of state or prime ministers or presidents of countries of the world?
I regard freedom of speech/expression as of prime importance, but with personal rights come personal duties.
In my Personal Opinion I feel it reflects Negatively when Members mock/insult political heads of state n this negativity caused by a handful reflects on the whole TNS Community as a whole.

(3) Last one n this might sound dumb but I can't resist but ask, what is an OP?
I assumed/interpreted it to mean Objective Problem or OPportunity to answer.
Have I misinterpreted, or miss assumed?

P.S. - an extremely delayed response is acceptable considering Christmas, a negative feedback would also be just fine but no response would be disheartening.
Thanks in advance for your Time.

I know you have addressed this to chris, but he is very busy working on the show and might not have time to respond immediately.

Regarding the F word and similar - including the * examples you give. This is a family show and site, we encorage both children (and even the elderly) to take an interest in science and to both read these posts and to ask thier own questions. For that reason we do remove such references and send the perp a warning. Fortunatly most people here are able to express themselves adequately without resorting to props so infringements are rare and dont take much of our time.  Note, Iíve left your examples here for clarity.

Regarding other rules. We tend not to create rules unless absolutely necessary and operate a relativly light touch moderation. As long as a post does not breach our acceptable use policy https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=8535.0 then it will be allowed.

OP is used on many fora to mean original post or poster. Adding the label seemed a useful way of indicating who started a topic without having to scroll back to the beginning everytime.

It is a sign of a healthy democracy, that anyone can mock or criticise priests, politicians and other parasites.

I am sure that those who object to such hard-won freedom, will be welcomed in forums hosted in North Korea or any of a hundred corrupt and benighted theocracies.

The essence of science is skepticism. Classic case was the visiting physics lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who greeted the class with "good morning", and a student shouted back "that's an assertion, not a proof". Deference to authority is the enemy of understanding. The fact that Donald Trump is president of the USA does not alter the fact that he is ignorant, unpleasant, and a failed  businessman. The near-extermination of fish from the North Sea was by agreement between heads of states. If you can't criticise stupidity, there is little point in thinking at all.

@ Colin2B

Thanks a lot for your feedback Colin, how very thoughtful of you.
Nice!  👌

Points (1) & (3) are crystal clear now to me 😁

Just out of stupid curiosity I had put those *F* phrases in the 'Search Box' n opted/selected the 'search by word/match any word' Criteria n searched all topics without any specific user search.

I did come across a rare few subjects/posts which did contain the *F* terms, but in comparison to the posts which did not contain it...I would say obscene posts or remarks were simply negligible.
Great Work Folks, Good Job!  👍

Hi alancalverd ☺

(1) LOL I completely agree with your view of mocking/criticizing. 👍

(2) ROFL again in complete agreement to what you stated, although personally I don't see anything wrong with the way in which Marshal Kim Jong Un runs his State affairs of DPRK.

(3) Yet once again in my personal opinion becoming an Elected President of one of the Most Powerful Democracy on this planet would not go down in my history book as a Failure.

But still I do stand for/with rights/freedom of expression.
Words/terms such as ignorant, unpleasant & failed businessman are an elegant way of reflecting disapproval n fall under mocking/criticizing category n as far as I'm concerned they are just fine/right. 👌

But Alan I do beg to differ slightly in regards with further elaboration, the point I'm trying to put across ain't about mocking/criticizing, rather it pertains to simple plain abuse n falls under the demeaning/insulting categorization.

P.S. - it probably takes 'balls of steel' or 'carbon testicles' to become the Elected Head of State, Supreme Commander-in-Chief, and hold the Highest Office in the Russian Federation.

"Anyone can become President" - a fundamental tenet of the US Constitution, and exemplified by the election of Richard Nixon, George W Bush and Wurdefuhrer Trumpf. That much is clear. I referred to his lack of business acumen: apparently if he had simply left his entire inheritance in the bank, he would have earned more that he now has - just like George W, in fact.

It's a funny old democracy that allows idiots to invade foreign countries for no reason or ignore the plight of their own citizens (Puerto Rico) after a hurricane, but prosecutes the president for having consensual sex with an adult.

God Help America.

This was the specific Topic I was referring to in my post, but now on second thought I suppose nothing wrong in a little gibberish on Christmas time by matured adults.
(Hopefully Russian hackers & Citizens would think likewise) 👍

Regarding what Mr D.J.T. did with his own inherited money is his own personal problem, but considering he was living his own life his way it was his own personal choices & decisions that mattered. Agreed he messed it up pretty bad, but then again he's only human.
We all mess up time n again in life, don't we Alan?
I would rather just mind my own business. 👌

Quote - " The Wise they say, Don't Judge. "

P.S. - Democracy is a simple harmonious concept which has turned into a complex chaotic system as a result of intellectual inability of our species to work together towards a common goal.
Communism looks Ugly, but gets the job done.

Messing up your own life is regrettable but mostly harmless to others. The problem with priests and politicians is that they have the power to mess up everyone's life and screw the planet too.

Quote - " The Wise they say, Don't Judge. "
Ah but they do.
They make judgements on the actions of others all the time, the difference is they make correct judgements and learn from that experience. Thatís what makes them wise.

@Colin2B

And hence they conclude, the Wise, advise to refrain from being judgemental.

The Wiser, would make the quote clearer by saying, " Judge thy self, before judging thy neighbour. "

And the Wisest would simply stay Silent, not because silence is golden.

P.S. - (have you read Alan's signature line, it probably says it all in a nutshell which I try explaining in a pumpkin manner.)

@alancalverd

Priests & Politicians, I've read your views on this topic before in a post of yours.

Again in total agreement with your view on the subject.

Would like to elaborate the view subjectively, Priests don't come parachuting from Heaven & Politicians don't arrive riding a bullet train from the deep dark valleys of Hell.

A Priest or Preacher seems to have an eternal itch for preaching, but no fingers, n no fingernails.
It is We, the People who freely & willingly provide them the service of a good scratch.
After all a Preacher needs listening ears, but has only two.
That's where We, the People provide them with a million pairs of eager to listen ears.

Similarly a Politician has an eternal hunger, for votes.
All they own is just one little vote of theirs in their pocket.
If left alone n sidelined they can't/won't survive for long with just one vote.
But that's where We, the People come into the picture.
We feed them with millions & millions of precious votes, n they not only survive but thrive on it.

P.S. - (have you read Colin's signature line, it says it all in two short lines which I try explaining through a thesis.)

Is Preaching Christianity allowed, promoted or overlooked on The Naked Scientists Forum?

(If any Mod could provide a simple yes/no answer, I'd be much Obliged.)
Thanks.

"but prosecutes the president for having consensual sex with an adult."
The USA is nominally a secular country but is nevertheless is under god who despite telling us to go forth and be fruitful is well known to disapprove of sex outside the bounds of holy matrimony.
Hence the matter of the president  having sex with other than his wife is a serious matter.
