Title: Water-lite
Post by: RD on 14/04/2019 03:35:49
Low-deuterium water ... https://qlarivia.com/what-is-deuterium-depleted-water/

Has a heavy price ... ~ $30USD per liter

That's odd - heavy water (99.9% purity) currently sells for about $780 for a kilogramme bottle, and $860 for a liter bottle. (Deciding which is the more economical purchase I will leave as an exercise for the reader...)

So they charge for the heavy water, and they charge for the wastewater too!

In the link provided by RD, they were fairly restrained in their claims for light water - they didn't claim it would cure cancer or refill your fountain of youth. But they did say the following:
Quote from: Qlarivia ad
Qlarivia deuterium depleted water is an immaculate, pure water, like the one that existed thousands of years ago on Earth.

Qlarivia means the Nature’s rediscovery using technology.

Qlarivia is an unique product with special benefits on the wellness of the human body
Deuterium was formed in the Big Bang, and gets actively consumed by stars and even in brown dwarf stars; so the amount of Deuterium in the universe is declining over time. I see no basis for claiming that deuterium-free water ever existed on the Earth, or was more abundant in the past.

The extremely vague reference to "wellness" is (no doubt) intended to avoid being asked for any actual evidence for their claims...

I was thinking that myself: life must have evolved in the presence of heavy-water.
It's not possible for animals to survive on exclusively on heavy-water, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_water#Effect_on_animals)
but perhaps for some biological processes the ~1:3000 level is beneficial (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=deuterated+biological).

Well, it's a lot cheaper than real deuterium depleted water
That's £158 / 100 ml
https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/search?term=Water%2C+deuterium-depleted&interface=Product%20Name&N=0+&mode=mode%20matchpartialmax&lang=en&region=GB&focus=productN=0%20220003048%20219853286%20219853121
But the dear stuff does have the advantage of a much lower D content.

An adult human naturally has about 1g of Deuterium.

You would have to drink nothing but "light Water" permanently to reduce this 1g of Deuterium significantly - and still you would get a lot of deuterium from food.

Toxic effects only start to become evident when about 25% of the hydrogen in your body is replaced by deuterium - and 50% is lethal.

So the amount of "Wellness" is debatable...

Deuterium was formed in the Big Bang, and gets actively consumed by stars and even in brown dwarf stars; so the amount of Deuterium in the universe is declining over time.
Deuterium (and Neutrons in general) are being created all the time in stars via proton-proton reactions.  It is the dominant reaction in stars as small as our own, but the CNO cycle dominates larger stars,  The latter generates helium from regular hydrogen without ever involving deuterium.

I see no basis for claiming that deuterium-free water ever existed on the Earth, or was more abundant in the past.
Not that such facts would ever slow a sales pitch. The implication of benefit from this fictional past pureness is equally baseless.

Why would waste product be so pure?  Sure, you want nice pure heavy water, but the process needs to be optimized to prevent impurities to that half of the sorting, not impurities to the waste side.  If I found a cheap way to get 99.9% purity of heavy water by extracting only 1/3 of the heavy atoms from sea water, I'd be rich, and my waste would still have 2/3 of the impurity of distilled water.

The qlarivia manufacturers say they have a patent for the process.
Cynical me checked: they do ... https://patents.google.com/patent/EP1794084B1/
( A patent is not proof the process is feasible though ).

The inventor also has an abandoned patent-application for using deuterium depleted water in cancer treatment ...

Heavy Water may have got a bad name from an incident in a Canadian heavy-water nuclear reactor.
An angry employee put some of the coolant water into the water cooler. This was reported in the press as people being poisoned by drinking Deuterium.

This amount of heavy water would not have been a health risk, but heavy water gets contaminated with Tritium due to neutron bombardment in the reactor. The health risk here was due to the Tritium, which is radioactive.

The quick way to make money these days is to sell stuff that doesn't contain something, be it "chemicals", "toxins", gluten, peanuts, ozone..... and now deuterium.

So I propose to sell glass ampoules containing less than 1 milligram of any known substance, with chemical analyses down to micrograms of certain known toxins/heavy metals/sodium/peanuts.... Obviously, if you hang these in your bedroom/teepee/meditation space/panic room they will absorb pollutant chemicals/radon/bad smells by the miraculous process of Osmosis [citation] discovered by [citation] and hitherto ignored by mainstream snake-oil merchants, over the next million years thanks to the exceptionally low porosity of our patented material. So you need never buy another one, and your great-grandchildren will appreciate your farsighted concern for their wellness. At only £999.73 (money back if not satisfied) can you afford to risk your peace of mind and descendants' wellness?

Except when it's had a bloody big crystal added ...
