Title: What is happening with Alzheimer's Disease?
Post by: scientizscht on 30/06/2019 17:54:22
Hello

I do not understand many things about Alzheimer.

If we remove the plaques, will we cure it? (apart from the cells that died)
If we prevent the production of the Aβ, will we stop its progression?
What is the physiological role of Aβ and β-secretase?

Why so many drugs that block Aβ production or aggregation or increase its removal, fail to benefit patients? What is the exact obstacleor is it that the target they affect is not related to the pathogenesis of the disease?

Thanks

In general in biology; it's not that simple.

This might help.

Many researchers feel the same way.

It's not clear if the plaques are a result of the disease process, the cause of the disease process, or the body trying to protect itself from the disease process. What we have is an association, not causation.

The failure of medicines that attack plaques to make a significant improvement in symptoms may be because the plaques are not a cause of the disease, or perhaps because the patient has already suffered too much damage by the time symptoms have appeared.
- It is possible that a successful medication would need to be started 20-30 years before symptoms appear.

One recent hypothesis was that oral bacteria may invade the brain, triggering the disease. Only, in many countries, doctors treat everything except the teeth.
- In this case, the most effective treatment would be to have a dental plan.

Conveniently, this week's Naked Scientists show is on this very topic! I'll post the link back here once we publish it.

We are all going to die most making less than 90 if we prevent  Alzheimer's Disease we are going to die with all our wits about us full of bright ideas for the future, is it not better to die in a semi comatose state.
