Title: I've heard of sperm banks, but not egg banks.

It seems that any (screened) male can donate sperm, but eggs are rather more controlled. Is this the case, and if so, why is this?

Removal of ova involves a surgical procedure whereas, as any male knows, for collection of sperm a good imagination or a copy of Hustler will suffice  [:D]

OK, I hadn't thougth of that. But is there a control on who gets what? Sperm banks (I understand) are pretty much open to all, and your donated sperm could end up anywhere (anyone). Are eggs only used by the provider, or at least remain in the family, or - there is egg donation isn't there?
???

I believe, although don't quote me on this, that ova are only used for IVF involving the natural mother or a surrogate; but surrogacy doesn't class as donation.

Actually, since posting the 1st part of this answer I've had a little think & I do seem to remember something about egg donation. I'll check it out.

But is it merely the practicality of obtaining the eggs that restricts their use for donation? Aren't eggs and sperm essentially 2 halves of one side the same equation that equals "baby". If so, why is there the limitation on only using eggs with the natural mother, or a surrogate when there isn't with sperm. Why is there not donation? Is it a storage problem? Are eggs harder to keep? Do they have a shorter storage period?

I feel much the same way and often wonder about these male female differences.. Why is a good question..
