I MAY choose academia in the future and personally, I would not want my students to have to handle the move themselves. Is there any alternative way to handle it? Is there a good reason to do it the way formerly described, anyway?
I was once in a similar situation except that the move took place in a secondary school. Teachers, rather than the pupils, were pretty much left to get on with it themselves, even down to finding packing boxes. I think that it was either thoughtlessness on behalf of management or, more likely, a cost saving exercise.
However, university labs must have a lot of very expensive, perhaps highly delicate equipment that should not be trusted to staff to move. Presumably there are insurance implications should staff/students/equipment be damaged during the move. Are there not specialist companies who carry out such removals?
