Physiology & Medicine / Antibiotics: How Long Before They Become Useless?
« on: 03/09/2005 13:37:34 »
Luckily you need a prescription to buy antibiotics in my country. Why is that a good thing then? In some places people take antibiotics uselessly and too often since they don't need to get a prescription for them. Moreover, I think that antibiotics are prescribed too easily -- at least in here.
Remember that antibiotics do not work against virus diseases (flu, cold, sore throat etc.) And if you take antibiotics too often some bacteria may become antibiotic-resistant. Let's hope SA (Staphylococcus aureus) won't become resistant to all antibiotic drugs in the future.
This may seem like something out of a yellow paper, but I remember some American scientist saying somewhere that the antibiotic drugs we have now will work  for only five years. It would be nice to know what he based that estimation on.

Physiology & Medicine / Psychoanalysis -- GOOD OR BAD?
« on: 06/08/2005 12:32:37 »
I believe that psychoanalytic therapy is a good form of treatment in many (most?) cases. I was just wondering whether it could have any negative effects on the patient, for example in a sexual abuse case...

Physiology & Medicine / Why do animals (including humans) yawn ?

I have a friend who thinks she is yawning "too" often. [:)] What are the physiological reasons behind that?

Just Chat! / Love
« on: 10/07/2005 14:15:02 »
What are the "mechanics" of falling in love?

What? Where? When? [:)]
Is it just our basic instict?
What characteristics make the other person desirable? Are there some sort of universal "rules" built-in our brains?
What happens in our brains when we fall in love?
Etc.

Can animals fall in love?

PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!

Any scientists of love around? Well, at least you're naked, that's a start. [;)]

Physiology & Medicine / Are male sperm counts in decline in the developed world?

Well, what can I say.. in decline.

We all would like to know why, wouldn't we.

That CAN'T be true! / Lemon Perfume
« on: 27/06/2005 09:53:42 »
I was listening to radio this morning... Unfortunately I missed most of the details, but what they were telling on the radio was that according to a scientific study, if a woman smells of lemons, it makes other people (men) think the woman is younger than she actually is.

Isn't that interesting?

But if a man puts on lemon perfume it won't work (on women)!

The men were asphalt workers.

A-Man-On-A-Deserted-Island-Effect, perhaps? [:D]

Physiology & Medicine / Epicenism :)
« on: 03/01/2005 17:51:41 »
Hi!

My question isn't purely scientific, but who cares... [:)] I have been playing a rogue-like called ADoM (www.adom.de) for few years now.

In this role-playing game there is a race called Drakelings. They are significantly different from all the others. They are a mythical lizard-like race.

Now as in all RPGs, you choose the sex for your character at creation. The only options are, of course, male and female.

However, I've been thinking that they could perhaps be epicene; hermaphrodite, intersexual, androgynous or neuter. I'm in the process of writing an RFE (request for enhancement) on this.

My question is, is there a species, in our world, able to switch from one sex to another at will? I've read about protandric hermaphrodites, but they cannot switch back to being males once they've turned into females.
