« on: 19/10/2005 22:12:00 »
Balloons, they give me the wiggins, it's a ridiculous fear, I can't explain it but I am curious about other people's phobias.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / The effects of weather on TV reception
« on: 25/06/2004 21:51:55 »
I get a brilliant TV signal when it's sunny and warm out but when it's cold the reception really deteriorates?

Why is that?

(and yes I have v poor quality TV top aerial  [:I])

Physiology & Medicine / Nervousness and butterflies
« on: 19/05/2004 21:32:55 »
Can anyone explain why it is that you get butterflies in your tummy when you are nervous about something or for that matter if you unexpectantly see someone you find attractive?

Thanks [:)]

Has anyone ever opened one of those self-seal envelopes and seen a blue flash?  Can anyone tell me what causes it?

Physiology & Medicine / What is Shingles and how is it treated ?
« on: 21/03/2004 22:50:50 »
My mum has shingles at the moment and is in a lot of pain.  She has been prescribed pain killers but it there anything else that she can take or apply to the rash to make it more comfortable for her?

I know that it is linked to the chicken pox virus but I don't really know much more about it.

Physiology & Medicine / What is a "Stitch" when you exercise ?
« on: 14/02/2004 00:51:34 »
Could anyone tell me what causes a stitch?
I got a stitch the other day whilst running but don't remember having one prior to that since I was a child. I run about 6km 4 times a week and don't normally have a problem but the other day I couldn't even manage 2km.  I hadn't eaten for about 3 hours before and I had warmed up which is the same as any other day but the pain was quite considerable.  I haven't suffered since but was wondering what caused it so that I could avoid getting one again in the future.

That CAN'T be true! / Where does the saying "acid test" come from?
« on: 03/02/2004 20:07:38 »
Can anyone tell me where the expression 'acid test' (and not the electric koolaid kind) comes from?

Physiology & Medicine / Quitting Smoking
« on: 31/01/2004 00:03:37 »
I gave up smoking in June last year and the one question that everyone asks is 'Do I feel better for it?'  However, I dont feel any different, I've put on 10 pounds and even though I go to the gym 4 times a week my blood pressure has gone up and my resting heart rate remains the same.  I have no intention of starting smoking again but would like some help in realising the benefits to my health by not smoking.  Any feedback is appreciated.

Physiology & Medicine / Scuba Diving
« on: 18/09/2003 22:14:43 »
I'm new to scuba diving but often suffer with terrible sinus headaches for a couple of days after diving even if I don't feel like I have a cold.  Someone suggested that I use a steroid based nasal spray prior to diving, does anyone have any advice or opinons on this?
