Just Chat! / Are You Gooder at Grammar?
« on: 11/09/2009 14:34:51 »
This is my test result.  [;D]  [^]

Your Language Arts Grade: 100%
Way to go!  You know not to trust the MS Grammar Check and you know "no" from "know."  Now, go forth and spread the good word (or at least, the proper use of apostrophes).
Are You Gooder at Grammar?

There's a mistake in this test, too! Check out question 10! FOG

New Theories / Can we come up with the best conspiracy theory ever?
« on: 22/07/2009 20:52:19 »
To the mods: If you think this thread would be better placed in the "Just Chat" section, feel free to move it. But hey... it will hopefully make up a new theory.

So what do we need for a conspiracy theory (CT)... I allways think no CT is complete without a deity or alien or a combination of both.

The Grand Canyon really is the landing mark of a huge alien spacecraft, the remains of the spacecraft are hidden in the Bermuda Triangle and are the cause of all those vessels and aircrafts disapearing. The aliens live in a large base under Roswell/Area 52. Oh yeah and those aliens have infiltrated the universities, that's why scientists tell those lies about the formation of the Grand Canyon.

So what are those aliens up to next, what did they do? Where they responsible for 9/11 too? Come on fellow Conspiraty Theorists, help me out here!

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Cats are manipulating, almost criminal masterminds?
« on: 13/07/2009 21:33:55 »
Well, yes, looks like they are... It seems that cats manipulate their owners with a cry embedded in their purr.
More about it here.

My late cat surely could do that urgent "Feed Me NOW!" purr.

Technology / How was Stonehenge built?
« on: 14/04/2009 20:54:14 »
Have you seen this? This guy is able to move huge stones without the use of modern technology. And when he explains it, it's so simple too. Those techniques could have been easily used by stoneage people. But I guess some people would rather have some aliens build stonehenge or the pyramids instead of those gread ancient engineers.

Physiology & Medicine / Have you thought about donating part of yourself?
« on: 02/04/2009 21:21:54 »
Nonono not money, but blood or stem cells or organs.

Just today I donated 500ml of my blood. It's so easy, the donation itself takes about 15 mins, after that you rest a bit and eat and drink something - that's it. You might feel a bit woozy afterwards and shouldn't plan to do anything strenuous.
Studies have shown health benefits for regular donors, and you get a free medical exam, they test your blood for HIV, hepatitis and other infectious diseases. Here in Germany you might even get some money for your donation, yet another nice benefit.  [^]
So give it a thought, it's easy and has benefits not just for you but for others who need blood after an accident or during surgery.

You might have heard about stem cell or bone marrow transplantations as well. Here's the wikipedia article. Becoming a donor is easy enough, from a blood sample you give, your HLA factors are determined. Those data end up in a database. Now if someone is your genetic HLA twin, you'll be asked to give some of your stem cells, either from the bone marrow in your hip bone or by a procedure very similar to a blood donation. Should someone somewhere in the world be my HLA twin, I'd gladly give him/her those stem cells. This donation would make with some luck the difference between life and death for that other person, so what's some discomfort for me compared to that.

Organ donation is a bit harder to discuss, after all you'll be dead when it happens. Here in Germany you get yourself a donor card, fill it in with your information and place it in your wallet. That's it, should you end up dead in a hospital and should your organs like heart, lung, kidney, liver etc be usable, they will be given to someone else in need of them. I like the thought that someone else will have a chance of a decent life. I surely don't need them any more, but someone else just might!

Yeah... that's what I wanted to say... <stepping down from soap box>

Physiology & Medicine / Why are some people sensitive to certain foods?
« on: 11/12/2008 22:40:02 »
I've been wondering about this for some time now.
I react negatively to some food stuffs, it's stomach trouble when I eat raw onions, I burp like crazy when I eat cucumbers, strong bowel movements and flatulences after eating cashews and peppers, I'm mildly lactose intolerant too, drinking a glass of milk will get me to the toilet for sure [::)] having a latte macchiato is no problem though *phew*

Most of the time I avoid those, but I love cucumbers, cashews and peppers, so I eat them anyway. Now I wonder, if this might do any harm to my intestines and stomach.
