Complementary Medicine / Stinging Nettles and Arthritis
« on: 20/08/2003 10:29:54 »
Does anyone remember a study a few years ago that claimed that stinging nettles (and maybe bee stings) could help ease the pain of arthritis ? How is that supposed to work ?

These so-called filters are a load of rubbish. The other day I sucked on a cigarette and as much smoke came through as ever.

Right...and 'instinctive behaviour' on the part of women such as PMT,  and menopausal symptoms, which like men's behaviour are also hormone driven, are similarly down to a lack of self control and hence why can't women commit themselves more strongly...to behaving normally ?!!!

I think I can see where supremedan is going with this...if a woman gives a man a blowjob, and semen contains lots of testosterone...there is a risk she might grow a beard, go bald, stop talking for a change and start thinking clearly !

Am I right ?

You intend to date a horse ? People go to prison for that sort of thing. That said, many man would say they already do.

« on: 05/06/2003 00:27:18 »
Yeah, I'm all for it. Make fatties lose some weight before going anywhere near them with a scalpel.

Smokers - difficult one. These guys genuinely pay for their nhs bill in the taxes they pay on their fags. Sure, once they need treatment, make em stop. But until then, keep fleecing them with heavy taxes whilst making them feel like lepers by insisting they stand outside the office door in the street to smoke !

Fat people though - just a reflection of poor self control. Too many chips, pies, burgers, sausages and ice-cream. Probably.

One way to mix sadness and joy...

"make your wife cry whilst you are having sex...by ringing her up and telling her !"

Can you also use the EEG to diagnose epilepsy and other brain disorders - I think I read somewhere that some disease (?Alzheimers) affect the EEG.

Some people have suggested that 'ghosts' are in fact manifestations of quantum effects and due to the existence of parallel universes of which we occasionally get a glimpse.

That CAN'T be true! / Re: Humans and Bananas
« on: 06/05/2003 03:13:27 »
Some mates of mine used to say that dried bananas, when smoked, could be hallucinogenic.

This sounds like cobblers, but is it true or even potentially true ?

Cheers,

General Science / Re: Photographic Memory
« on: 02/05/2003 09:48:35 »
Quite funny that we've been calling you copper sulphate !

Copper sulphate is a bit of a washed out blue I always thought. If memory serves correctly, a much nicer colour can be made by adding some ammonia, then a lot more ammonia. Initially the ammonia forms a horrible pale blue complex that is cloudy, then with further ammonia a deep rich dark blue emerges. Try it.

Brings new meaning to the term "Stop Watch" !

Sounds like the plot for your next online thriller...

I too thought that it was down to a strobe effect on old cameras until the other day when I witnessed the same 'illusion' happening to a car's wheels - in broad daylight. No camera involved. How do you explain that ?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Can jumping upwards enable you to survive in a falling lift (elevator)?
« on: 21/04/2003 23:03:41 »
I love that word "squishing" - definitely onamato..whatever the word is. Onomatopoeia, that's it !

So I guess the only way to survive a lift in free fall, getting back to the original (rather good) question, would be to suspend yourself on some very strong elastic bands from the roof of the lift and wear a crash helmet so that the rebound didn't decapitate you ?!

I have heard though that it is impossible for a lift to free fall thanks to a cunning victorian invention that is added to all lifts and which shoves locking pins outwards into a thing like a ratchet stopping the lift, if ever the cable were to snap. Does anyone know the name of this gadget and even the inventor ? Am I right in what I say ?

You're most welcome - I find it's a great technique and works for lots of other situations too including "don't look down" type scenarios, as well as "don't panic!" style events !
